The crowning was the climax to a two-week campaign con ducted by 14 Senior High girls. One of five finalists which were determined by the amount of money turned In, Llndy received the most votes from the student body. Other finalists and their escorts were Shelley Stallings with Steve Wright, Jackie Smith with Johnny Morrlng, Susan Klltzner with Mickey Bailey, and Mltzl Moore with Julian Fenner. Danny Talbott, escort of Miss Print, was hailed as Mr. Print. All the candidates, wearing evening dresses, and accom panied by their escorts, entered from the back of the auditorium and were seated on stage. Dwight Thomas, Editor of THE BLACK BIRD, then crowned Miss Print while Dell Harris, Business Manager, crowned Mr. Print. Miss Print was presented a bou quet of flowers and a charm engraved “Miss Print 1962.” “Winter Wonderland” was the theme for the assembly. The stage was decorated with a snow scene, highlighted by a sleigh which served as a unique throne. Music was furnished by pianist Lynn Peterson. The Miss Print assembly is an annual affair conducted by THE BLACKBIRD Staff. The money received helps to defray the ex penses of THE BLACKBIRD. The Choir: program will consist of the following eight selections; “Help Me To Help My Neigh- bor”, “The Angels’ Song”, “Birth of a King”, “An Old- fashioned Christmas”. “The Baby Was a King”, Holy Jesus”, “Night Journey of the Wise Men”, and “We saw Him Sleep ing”. Last Sunday the choir pre sented Its program for the Woman’s Club at the Rio Res taurant. This has become an annual tradition for the choir. Theme !s Unusual For Annual Dance Annual Christmas dance spon sored by the Student Organiza tion will begin tomorrow night at 9:00 In the school gym. Theme of the dance win oe focused on Christmas'and the Blackbirds, State Football Cham pions. To emphaclze the Christ mas theme, a twelve-foot Christmas tree will hang from the center o f the dance floor. The Ideas for decorating were ori ginated by Linda Dickson and A. G. Smith, with the help of the Social Committee. Refreshments will be furnished by the p. t. s. a. with Jean Hayworth In charge of the com mittee. At the Clvltan meeting last Tuesday, they also presented a Christmas program. This meet ing was held at Buck Overton’s Barbeque Restaurant. Next Monday they will be singing for the Current Topics Club. Assembly Planned By Service Club Mr. C. M. Edson, Miss Alma Murchison, and the Senior High choir will compose the traditional Christmas program December 20 during sixth period. This pro gram is sponsored annually by the Service Club. Mr. Harold Parry will con duct the choir In a 25 minute program. The choir will sing these eight selections; “Help Me To Help My Neighbor”, “Holy Jesus”, “Night Jorney of the Wise Men”. “We SawHlmSleep- ing”, “The Angels’ Song”, “Birthday of a King”, “An Old- Fashioned Christmas”, and “The Baby Was a King’?, Mr. -iJfirry has been presenting a Christmas program for about 30 years. Miss Murchison, English Tea cher, will tell a serious story about the true meaning of Christ mas. Principal Edson will do his traditional impersonation of Santa Claus. With the help of his elves. Pinky and Pudgy, Santa will read letters from Senior High students. The assembly will close with the annual presentation of money to the janitors and maids. This money Is collected by Service Club members and It expresses thanks for the many services of our Janitors and maids. Six seniors of Rocky Mount Senior High have been chosen by ^Inclpal c. M. Edson to comi>ete for the local Elks Lead ership Award. Ginna Aldridge, Greg Low, Jan McCrary, Routh Oates, Dwight Thomas, and Skipper Tuttle will represent Senior High in the competition. Candidates must compile a brochure abcmt themselves. This brochure should contain a recent photograph of the nominee, a statement of less than 300 words by the nominee summarizing his activities and accomplishments, a letter from a parent or re lative, two or three letters of endorsement from persons who have had an OHportunity to ob serve the nominee, and news paper clippings, photos, etc., that the nominee deems Important. The official entry blank must also 1 be placed in the brochure, Each Elks Lodge will select an outstanding boy and an out standing gfrl upon a special rat ing formula. Leadership, which Includes initiative, organiza tional ability and influence on others, will count 40 points, Twenty points will be awarded for citizenship appreciation. This Includes “Interest in and concern about our cherished privileges of citizenship and constituted gov ernment, and ^participation In community and Americanization programs”. Perseverance, re sourcefulness, and sense of honor also rate 20 points. These qua lities are judged as “exempli fied by their record In school, church, community, etc., especi ally in overcoming difficulties, includes integrity, sportsman- shlp, general character and re putation’ \Neatnes¥an31irrahger' ment of the brochure will count ten points and compliance with Instructions will constitute the final ten points. Winners in the local com petition will receive a $100 U. S. Savings Bond and the right to compete on the state level. Win ners in state competition compete on the national level with the top award being a $1000 U. S. Sav ings Bond. Each of the students com peting for the award from Senior High have exemplified their lead ership In various ways.
