DECEMBER 13, 1962 field goals^and team mate John Mann added four points. The half- time busser sounded with Kinston leading the Birds, 31-22. Senior High’s highly ranked Blackbirds could never overcome an early point splurge by Kinston and lost'to the Red Devils, 55-49. In the Birds’ season opener here last Friday night, the Red Devils were losing 5-1 early in the first quarter but scored 12 straight points to go ahead until a tie in the closing minutes. First Quarter Danny Talbott scored the first point of the game on a free throw. Allen Wester and Tom Parrish scored a basket each for the 5-1 lead. Willie Taylor sank a field goal and four free throws to spark the Kinston rally, and the other four starters chipped in two points apiece. Talbott stole a Kinston pass and laid it up for two. Parrish , hit a field goal and a free throw to end the first quarter scoring. Second Quarter Statistics FG FT TP Reb. Wester and Parrish each hit two free throws and a bas ket. Titus Martin, the big Red Devil center, got hot and sank three Thir^ Quarter The third quarter was* basket- for-basket scoring. Parrish hit his favorite jump shot to give the Blackbirds a two point edge for that period, and cut Kinston’s lead to seven points. Fourth Quarter In the final quarter, the act ion was fast and furiouw. Both teams scored more in the fourth then in any other period. Rocky Mount, in a desperate effort to pull the game out, outscored Kinston 8-1 for a 40-40 tie. Kinston then jumped to 44-40 and the Birds never got closer than two points for the remainder of the game, Martin led all scorers with 18 points. Parrish was second with 17, and Talbott finished third with 14. Kinston edged Rocky Mount at the foul line, hitting on 15 of FLOWERS! The way to a woman’s heart is through flowers. In the first quarter, RM, outscored Kinston 10-6 and in the second period by 9-5, Kinston came into the game after halftime with new life, and found holes in the RM defense to score 14 points in eight min utes. Roqky Mount now tightened up the defense and pulled away to the final score, 39-31. Big Jimmy Clack led in both the rebounding and scoring de partments. His 12 points came on three field goals and six free throws. Randy Randall led th Kinston team with 10. Other Rocky Mount scoring was .Ronald barnes 7, Steve Caddell 5, Jimmy Arringtons, Bunn Wood ard 3, Digit Laughtridge 3, '■ Joe Swaim 3, and Frank Harri son 2. After the Yankees released Robin Roberts without a pitching turn last spring, the righthander compiled a 10-9 record with Baltimore. His earned run mark of 2.78 was second in the Amer ican League. The American League had four 20-game winners last season, led by Yankee Ralph Terry's 23. Dick Donovan of Cleveland, Ray Herbert of the White Sox and Camilo Pascual of the Twins won 20 games each.
