Thao, Foster Child, Writes Seniors

Varied Activities Make The News
During American Education
Week, Nov. 8-13, the National
Honor Society has presented to
members of the Senior High
faculty arrangements of flow
ers as tokens of appreciation
to and observation of the work
of teachers. By doing this the
National Honor Society, accord
ing to advisor Mrs. Van Bus
kirk, hopes to make it clear
to students that teaching is a
higlily regarded profession and
requires “dedication, love of
life and success, and many
years of training.”
Eddie Baysden is the Driver
of the Month. He is entitled to
drive the 1965 Corvair provided
by Bel-Air Chevrolet for one
month. He also gets 50 gallons
of free gas.
Seniors Roslyn Smith and
Ann Watson were contestants
for Queen of the eighteenth an
nual Nash County Harvest Fes
tival, October 16. The Nashville
Jaycees escorted the contest
ants.
On October 22, members of
the Northeastern District of the
North Carolina Educational As
sociation met at Elizabeth City.
Since teachers were to attend,
students enjoyed a holiday.
Members of the faculty who
taught under Mr. Cy Edson,
now Director of Secondary
Education and Special Services
for Rocky Mount City Schools,
entertained at a reception at
the home of Mr.. and Mrs. W.
R. Teague. Mr. Edson received
a watch as a gi£t, with poetry
presented by Miss Murdhison.
Varied colors will be flashing
when the juniors’ class rings
arrive. Tlie rings should arrive
before Christmas if ordered in
time.

The boy is Nguyen Van Thao;
Thao to his friends. His foster
parents are the present senior
class.
For 180 dollars a year
the seniors receive strange let
ters that have salutations be
ginning in the middle of the
line and references to Dulan,
Budda’s birthday, and flam
boyants, trees with blood-red
petals.
Thao’s major news for the
past few months has been
about a difficult eam that
determines Whether his edu-

istration is November 20.

but you will be able to take
the test.

January 8 test is December

died in defense of their coun
try, he may be able to enter
a public school, since he pass
ed the exam.
Vietnamese usually have
three names. The first name,
in this case, Nguyen, is the
family name. Van is the mid
dle name customarily given to
boys; the name Thi is given
to girls. The last name is the
name .the person is called by.
Tlhao is under the Foster
Parents Plan, which means
that he will receive, in addition
to the eight dollars we send,
clothing, food, and household
articles. However, because of
the fighting, transporation is
difficult and cash grants have
been substituted for the sup
plies.
In 1953 the senior class first
adopted a child, and the adop
tion is now a tradition. The
children adopted have been
from several countries. Last
year a complete family was
helped by this plan.
Thao finishes his letters,
“With your kind permission I
will close for now, wishing you
all the best of everything.”
