Page 4 THE BLACKBIRD Friday, Jan. 27, 1967 School Spirit Chairman Recieves Double Honor January is a double honor month for Jeff Surles. He is the January Rotary Boy and recipient of the Outstanding Stu dent Car. Perhaps a major reason for the selection of Jeff for these two honors is his truly outstand ing work as chairman of the school Spirit Committee. This year, the school spirit at RMSH hias been heightened greatly because of this committee which acts instead of talking. Many students remember thie excel lent program on school spirit presented in November. It was this same committee under Jeff’s direction that worked with concentration for two weeks in order to put on the assembly. Jeff likes to read, play chess, and enjoys almost all sports. At the present, he is statistician for the basketball team. Science is his favorite field of study. He has already been accepted at State University. In spite of warnings by some State Uni versity students (that the field i!s a hard one, Jeff plans to major in chemistry. Rotary Girl For January Uses Energy And Talent RMSH Stutlent In JEFF SURLES is the Jan uary Rotary Boy and recipi ent of the Outstanding Stu dent Car. The Saga Of Laboratory Vandal Perspiration began trickling down ithe neck of the boy sit ting in the small booth of the RMSH language laboratory. He sort of trembled in his chair, knowing that eventually She would tune in on him. Relief With Disgust He figeted as She looke-d at him. He thought to himself, “She knows that I have no idea what the imperfect tense of aller (French verb to go is. Why doesn’t She pass over me?” Finally, She tuned in on him, listened a few seconds, and then moved on. The boy shuddered with relief. He slowly flushed to a dull red, knowing itihe mark She had put on her book—an “E”. Then, in disgust, he bent the microphone into a circular shape, slammed off all the switches in his booth, and rose to join his other classmates as they filed iback into the class room. A week later, when his class returned to the lab, he found that the entire system in his assigned booth had been re moved, So, he had to move to another booth. Little did the student realize that his mis treatment of the equipment caused several switches to be short-circuited, the mike to break, and that because of his own vandalism, the school wias having to pay to have the booth repaired. This is an incident tliat often occurs in the langu age lab. The vandals are un known but the action is ap parent. The language laboratory was installed in the spring of 1961 in the new wing of RMSH. The installation of the lab was made possible by N. D. E. A. (the National Defense Education Act.) The Federal government paid half of the cost and the city of Rocky Mount paid the other half. The total price of the laboratory was EIGHT THOUSAND DOLLARS. It is the student who benefits from the lab by leairning to speak a foreign language with a better accent and intonation. We at Senior High are very fortu nate and ought to show our ap preciation for fine study aids by treating them with the re spect due to them. Along with a student’s senior year comes the sometimes dreaded task of writing the Senior Theme. No matter what seniors say about the work they put into the paper, they must admit that amazing tidbits of in formation do crop out of their research. Since each senior must make a talk from his paper, others are exposed to such interesting facts as the ones below.
