Friday, April M. 1967 BLACKBIRD Pafe 5 Track, GoK, Tennis Tearns Realize The Intense Competition At Meets Stpring golf, tennis, and track have experienced up and down game x«sults thus far in an early season. The golf team placed sixth in a nine team field on March 30, in WUison. The winning spot went to Wil son and Wilmington "with a total 309. Rocky Mount’s team finished with a total rf 316. Hie qualifying golfeirs were DicMe B«Ty with 77, Dan Ballance with 79, and Hatdher Kincheloe and Harry Fish each with 80. Other scores were Tommy Alexander with 85 and Sonny Lea witii 87. The linkers play^ again in Raleigh on April 6. The tennis team, at the mo ment, .sports a 3-1 record, hav ing taken victories from Wes leyan, Goldsboro, and Wilson. The long-awaited additions to the gym wiU be begun during the fall. This will guarantee a more varied program and greater participation by the student body. It wiU probably bring wrestling back to RMSH after a two year 'absence. Within the next few- years, juniors wiU be required to take physical eduoaition, anidi it will finally be worked to the point where students from grades ono through eleven will have to take phyisicaJ education. It will be an elective for seniors. Add ed locker rwom space will al low RMSH to draw champion ship basketball tournaments, something that heretofore has been impossible. Eyes turn from hopes of one victory to hcipes of a championslhip club. One bright spot in our other wise dismal football season comes from the naming of tack le Chuck Ball as an alternate to the Boys’ Home North-South game which will be pl^ed at East Carolina’s FicMin Me morial Stadium this summer. Baseball Team Victorious As New Season Begins The RMSH baseball team took off like a flasih of light ning as the baseba'E iseason began March 22. Although the season is still young the Black birds have certainly shown rea son to be an Eastern 4-A i>ower. On two consecutive days, March 22 and March 23, tho Birds defeated Booker T. Wash ington High School by re spective scores of 8-1 and 7-3. Senior Sonny Robinson took oredit for the first game, and Senior Edidie Lynch woo tho second. March 28, the Birds played host to the Goldsboro Quakes and sent them home a loser. The final score was 2-1, Sonny Robinson once again taking the victory. Again March 31 the team Qiosted Ralei^ Brough ton and slipped by them 8-7. Victory number five came April 4, when the Birds tra veled to Wilson for a game with tough Fike High School. The Birds returned with another victory, as they defeated Wil son 7-4 behind the superb pitch ing of Lynch. Last Friday, April 7, the Birds hosted Ra leigh Enloe in R. M. Leading hitters for the birds this year have been Tony Davis, Mike Hargrove, Tony Bossolono, and Gus Robertson. In the pitch ing department Sonny Robinson with a 3-0 record and Edidie Lynch with a 2-0 record are the leaders. our first since 1958. Tho k>sis was to Raleigh Broughton. Graham Felton has the only undefeated record on the squad with 4-0. Julian Ruffin displays a 3-1 mark, playing number two man on the team. Bruce Gurganus stands 2-2 while Jeff Hedgepeth is 2-1. Also position ed at 2-2 are Chip Penick and Millard Woodard. Jim Bailey and Greg Copley have met suc cess as sapftiomore candidates in doubles. The track team made thoir debut tiiis seaison in a meet vidbh Goldsboro. Goldsboro won out 74-45. The thinclads excelled in high jump with Jimmy Clay ton and Phillip Johnson, the 880—with Sebastian Brewer, the low huridles with Harry Threatt and the pole-vault with Joe Chapman and Nikki Wicker. In the April 6 meet, the Black birds went against Jackson ville and Durham in Durham. Durham took tho match by 66-64 with our thinclads getting 19 points, Jimmy Clayton and Phillip Johnson came in 1-2 in the high jump. Chuck Ball placed third in the shot puit for the second week.
