Pafe 6 THE BLACKBIRD Friday, April 14, 1967 RMSH Service Club Delivers Holy Week Morning Devotions On March 23 the Service dub presented an Easter Sun rise Service at Trinity Luther an Church. The service was given in conjunction with a (program of Holy Week services. The first three programs were given in the aulditorium at homeroom period by Rev. Prank Leggett of the Fiirst Christian Ohufch, Dr. Russell Cherry of the First Baptist Church, and Rev. Clay Turner of Christ Episcopal Church. The Sunrise Service) began at seven a. m. and was at- tendejdi by approximately 150 per sons. Brenda Thompson opened the service by giving the in- vocalaon. Johnny Gower read the scripture. Roger Stancil de livered the main address with an Easter theme. Pastor Mayer of the Trinity Lutheran Church closed the service with the ben ediction. DE G>nvention The DE Club of RMSH re ceived a three star plaque at the recent statewide DE Con vention in Asheville, N. C. The three star plaque is the highest award a DE Club can receive. The RMSH DE Club was one of 13 out of 186 clubs in North Carolina to win this award. CHERRY POINT AIR STATION U. S. MARINE CORPS BAND Marines Entertain Students In a school assembly held March 29, the United States Marine Band from Cherry Point, North Carolina perform ed for the student ibody. This band, formed six years ago and consisting of sixty-five members, played a variety of music, providing an unusual treat for the students, many of whom lhad never seen a Marine band in concert. Among others, the band played a medley from My Fair Lady, the Sandpaper Ballet, se> leotions from tlie Tijuana Brass, and two numbei:s by a rock’n’roll group, The Monkees, which was p>erformed by a so-called Barber Shop Quartet, Several marches were also played in this Marine display of precision and execution. The group used several costumes to add to their variety of music. The band was obtained through Gunnery Sergeant A. C. Pate of Wilson, the Marine recruit er in this area. The contest, sponsored by the business school of East Caro lina College, included competi tion in both the advanced and beginning classes. Mrs. Josephine McGee, Mrs. Jane G. White and Mrs. Nellie Rhea Winstead, teache-ns in the business department, each had a winner from her class. Mary Tonya Brown, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Birown of 313 Mallory St., made a first place showing in the ad vanced class. The second place winner in the advanced class was Wamda Smith, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. M. Smith of 1145 Long Ave. Winner in the beginning class was Beverly Rosser, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. O. Rosser of Whitakers. The sc-cond place slot was thrown to a tie, as both Fran Warren and Lee Bobbit made the same high scoring. Fran is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Warren of 3301 Winstead Rd. Lee is the son of Mr. and Mrs. WOliam Bob- bit of 414 BriarcMff Rd. From the local contest, these winners will go to a district competition which will be held at East Carolina College in late April.
