Hill, lyn Arrington, Gwen Herring, Carol Council, (Photo by Killebrew) Patty McBride, Laurie Thorp, Keith Tilson, At Football Games Color Guard Boosts Student Spirit Accidents Mar European Tour Miss Abna Murchison, well known teacher at RMSH, had a streak of bad luck on her recent trip to Europe- Miss Murk was serving as chaperone to seventeen area students on a study tour. The first accident took place In Dublin, Ireland- While trying to catch herself after having twisted her ankle and fallen, she fractured her upper left arm. Miss Mary Alice Edson, another chaperone, inforined the students about the accident. Miss Murk refused to be pam pered and proved she was fine- On a ferry boat from England to Calais, France, Miss Murk suffered a second mishap- She slipped on some grease, turning her left ar&le. She spent three days in a French hospital get ting her ankle set and had great difficulty with communication as only one nun spoke English- After her release from the hos pital Miss Murk met her group in Paris at which time they boarded a plane for the United States. Upon arrival in Rocky Mount, Thursday, August 29, she was taken directly to Sanitarium Hospital where she underwent surgery the next day. The doctors hope that she will be walking soon, but not well enough to resume her teaching position for about two weeks. All the students are waiting with great anticipation for her return. The world’s largest forest for research and education is operated by North Carolina State University. It is the 80,000-acre Hofmann Forest in Southeastern N. C. This year, football season brings a new highlight to our half time show. A drill team made up of thirteen selected girls wiO march to the rhythm of our band. It was originated by Mr. Sykes, the band director, in an effort to add a little pep to our school, spirit. Leading the color guard in its first year is Shelly Wilgus. The other members are Leigh White, Harriet Shearin, Keith Tilson, Laurie Thorp, Diane Bourne, Gwen Herring, Cathylyn Arrington, Patty Mc Bride, Carol Council, Carole Swain, Jane Gravely and Isla K. Hill. Together with Shelley, the girls have worked long and hard to accomplish the special rou tines chosen by Mr. Sykes. Dur ing the first part of the sum mer many of the girls attended a special clinic at N. C. Wes leyan College for two days to inform them of their purpose and duties as a member and to practice different routines which they will perform on the field. They will travel with the band in rnanl out of town strips. R.M. Teens Flock To Coffee House For P'liii, Music The steering committee of the Vault, a local teenage night spot, met on Tuesday, Septem ber 3 in preparation for the re opening of the Vault. It was announced at this meeting that the Vault will be open on most Friday nights- Opening time will be 8 p. m- on nights when there is no home football game, and closing time will be at 11 p- m- When the Blackbirds play a home football game, the Vault will open at about 9:30 p- m- and cose at 11:30 p- m- Originally, the Vault was es tablished for the students of Wesleyan College. However, in the spring of 1968 the high school students was opened to the high school students on Fri day nights and the college stu dents on Saturday nights- The students provide all of the re freshments and entertainment at the Vault- The Vault will bo open to college students on Saturday nights from 8 p- m- until 12 p- m- After a slow summer, the Vault has been re-decorated and is prepared to provide en tertaining programs to the teen agers and college students of Rodcy Mount. The University of North Carolina School of Dentistry has one of about 100 schools of dental assisting in the U- S. and one of the 50 schools for dental hygienists- Some schools are in community col leges and technical institutes.
