Page 6 THE BLACKBIRD Friday, May 23, 1969 Blackbirds Are Tourney Bound With Nifty Seven Game Streak The BJackbirds’ chances of going on to toumament games are steadily increasinig with an outstanding seven game vic tory sweep and an over-all standing of 14-3. With the ex ception of the Wilmington game, the Birds have done ex ceptionally well these past few weeks, defeating one opponent after another. Northern Nash In their diiel with Northern Nash, Rodcy Mount secured a 4-1 victory with winning pitch er Terry Talbott, junior right hander, and losing pitcher Danny Moore of Northern Nash. Althougih the Knights’ hitting was slightly superior, a good defensive game by the Birds insured victory. Wildcats Explode Wilmington’s faint^Uc hitting rally in their April 22 game with the Birds caused Rocky Mount to suffer its most crush ing defeat of the season at 12-0. During the course of the game, the Wildcats slammed 11 hits off at Rocky Mount’s starting pitcher Charles Bel’ and relief pitcher Charlie Rose, , while Wilmington’is David Sandlin pitched a shut game and allowed a total of only 2 hits. Turning Point The Birdts’ most crucial game of the season occurred April 24 with the Eniloe Eagles. Had the Blackbirds not se cured nhir 4t2 victory! over the Eagles, they would have lost all chances for tourna- meni play-offs. Terry Talbott was the pitcher* for RMSH who won over Cox of Enloe. Victory Over The Cyclones The three-man pitching com- Wnation of Bell, Wallace, and Rose stood against the Wilson Cydoneis for a 5-4 victoi7. Rocky Mount was again out done in hitting with the count standing at Wilson-11 hits, Rocky Mount-7 hits, but RMSH rallied to victory. Goldsboro And Fayetteville The Eart'hquakes fell to the Birds with the final score at 7-3 with Talbott starting pit cher and Rose relieving pitch er. On May 1, Rocky Mount chalked up its fourth consecu tive win by defeatng the Fayetteville Bulldogs. Bell Rose did the honors for the Birds on the pitching mound whde the team as a wihole slammed out 11 hits to Fayetteville’s 1. Sweep Continues The Bladcbirds met the Jacksonville Oardinals on tSiie'lr own tame ground on May 6, grabbing another win With a final score of 5-2. The winning trend continued with another victory for Bell and Rose with a final score of 6-3. The sophomores who played much (tf the game turned in a fine performiaace against Sou thern Nash and’ helped the Birds to a seventh straight victory at 3-1. The above paragraph fairly well sums up the situation for the boys gym classes at RMSiH thds year. Since Jan uary 1, they have sat quietly, noisily, aninuatedly, or bore- dely in the various rooms around RMSH where they have been forced to meet. This had been very unfortunate for these fine male specimen who have often lounged for the re lease of energy that accom- paniies a voilent rebound in a basketball game or a 300 foot shot to center field in a closely contested game of sofitball. On the other hand, the girls have managed to dress out for both the fifth and sixth six weeks periods. However, they haven’t had their dress ing rooms repaired. In fact, they spent one entire six weeks running, and running, and running, until they were pro bably run out. Indeed, for all those involv ed, tliis has been a unique yeari n the RMSH gym class es. RMSH played WUminglon New Hanover for their fourth match of the season. In the singles the Birds were slhut- out. The doubles gave the Birds one win when John Bur nett and Dillon Coleman won out over Currie and Pridee- more of New Hanover. The doubles ended with the score. Birds 1, Wilmington 2. The match itself ended with Wilmington on top 8 to 1. Double Shut-Out When the Birds faced Ra leigh Emloe the tides turned. In the singles Jeff Hedgepeth won over Enloe’s Lane, the Birds Lewis Handy over Fitts, and Powell Jenkins over En loe’s Jones. The single play ended and the score stood 3 to 3. The final blow came for Enloe in the doubles when Jeff Hedgepeth and Lewis Hardy won out over Abron and Lane, Dillon Coleman and John Burnett netters for the Birds won over Colbert and Lloyd, and Powell Jenkine and Woody Redick won out over Enloe’s Fitts and Mitchel. At the couclus'ioii of the match the Birds wore on top again with a score of 6 to 3. One Point Counts With two big wins under their belts the Birds faced Wilson Fike. The single play gave the Birds three wins. Jeff Hcdgepth over Finch, Lewis Hardy over Miller, and Powell Jenkins over Kirby of Wilson. The doubles gave the Birds the game when Jeff Hed'gepeth and Lewis Hardy, our own Birds, won over Finch an Miller of Wilson, and Po- wel Jenkins and Woody Red dick wo nover Campbell and Williams. The Birs left the court with a winning score of 5 to 4, The Birds have accumulated three big wins and presently have a two game winning streak. When the netters faced Fayetteville the Birds wrap ped up another win thus broad- ing their winning streak to three. In the singles Lewis Hardy won over Dean of Fayetteville, the Bird’s Jolhnny Barker over Woodard, Powell Jenkins over Murphy, and the Bird’s Craig Smith over Hill. Single play concluded with the Birds in the lead 4 to 2. Unfortunately tlK tide turned for Fayetteville in tlie doubles and they caJne up with two wins.
