Louise Weeks and Queenie Watson. Homecoming Activities Are Supported By Students Friday, October 16 was of ficially proclaimed as Gryphon Day by Mayor John Minges, thus urging the citizens to par ticipate in RMSIPs Homecoming activities. Here at school, the big day was ushered in at home room period with the distribu tion of approximately 225 yel low mum corsages by the Good %)orts Club to the student body. These same cheerful and tireless club members were also kept busy all that day sell ing ribbons. Over 1,000 stud ents took advantage of a spe cial bargain offered on these ribbons, purchasing two of them, one labeled “Beat Golds boro” and the other “Home coming”, for only fifteen cents. At 2:30, another club took charge of the Homecoming fes tivities, the Service Club. As .nost students joyously left the campus, thrilled at their extra Youth Council Adds Enjoyment For Many In Area The Youth Council is made up of forty members, ranging from sophomores to seniors. The main objective of the coun cil is to provide entertain ment for the youths in the sur rounding area. The Youth Council meets every Wednesday night for ap proximately an hour. At the last meeting the following of ficers were elected: Presi dent, Doug Braswell, Vice Pre sident, Mike McGee, Secre tary, Louise Weeks, Treasur er, Sisan Pittman, and Sergeant of Arms, Kevin Easly. In past years the Youth Coun cil has sponsored such things as Easter egg hunts for small children, helped needy people during Thanksgiving and Christmas, carwashes and dan ces. This year holds in store many of the same things. Already a car wash has been sponsored by the Council at the new K-Mart and the profits were reportedly to be pret ty good. The Council, has scheduled a dance for Nov. 14. Hie band for the dance will be the South ern Soul from Wilson. hour of freedom, this club’s members supervised the frantic labor of those who had remain ed to work on floats. As each at the forty-seven entries slow ly pulled away from the school at 3:30, the judges picked the winners of the parade. The top three entrants were: the Good Sport’s Club-first place, the D. E. cbib-second, and the Student Representative Assembly-third place. A few hours later, as the Cli max to Gryphon Day, the clash with the Greensboro Cougars was on as the first kick of the game was made. Confetti, cold weather, and the good spirit of the crowds livened up the air. During haUtime, the Home coming finalists rode around the field atop shiny white con vertibles and waved to the crowds. The Junior Sweet hearts were Terri Biggerstaff and Yvonne Dew, and the Senior Sweethearts were the cheer leader CO-heads, Louise Weeks and Queen Watson. Despite these pretty sights and the yelling of one of the ‘ biggest crowds to attend a RMSH football game in five years, howevpf, the might Gryphons suffered their first loss of the season, with the final score being Goldsboro-27, Rocky Mount-15. As might be expected, the at tendance at the Homecoming Dance, which immediately fol lowed the game, was disappoint ingly small. Those students who did come, though, were soon able to overcome their crest- f&Uenness, as they danced to the beat of the Blue Mooners, a soul group from Wilson. In between dances, the couples slid across the slippery floor to reach the Commons area, where the Sophomore Class sold soft drinks. Each month the Human Rela tions Committee sponsors a Human Relations couple of the month. This month’s two well- deserving recelpients are Mar go Wiley and Dennis Graham. Margo Wiley No one was surprised to learn that Margo Wiley had beencho- • sen for HumJSj“'EelatIons .girl. She’s warm and friendly to everyone. It’s a rare occasion that one finds Margo without a smile on her face. Her halp is free-just for the asking. Margo has been very active in her three years at RMSH. She displayed great school spi rit her sophomore year by being on the J. V. Cheer leading squad. Margo is presently serving as co-chairman of the Social Com mittee. aie Is a member of the art club. Margo also helps keep our school grounds clean by participating in clean-up camp aigns. Margo’s enthusiasm doesn’t SAT Does Prove A Big Hang-Up The Scholastic Aptltute Test (SAT) is given several times a year at RMSH. Juniors may take it at the end of the year. Seniors are allowed to take the test as many times as they feel necessary. “Oh! heck, I sure hate to see this SAT test come up,” said Jane, “it just turns me off to even think about it.” “I know what you mean, that test just can’t be real,” Mike added, “big tests like that are my hang-up too.” “You know these tests are taken year af ter year after year and every body, well just about every body takes it. So maybe we had better take It so people won’t think we’re dumb and Can’t.” “Yehl I guess you’re right.” “Let’s go in there with a posi tive attitude.” “I mean heck— I have as much brains as the next guy--sometimes they just exercise thelr’s more.” “Let’s go.” Maybe the SAT Is a hang up for some but when was there ever a time that you didn’t get a little nervous when a test was passed out; this test Is just a little bit longer, so just clinch your teeth and It won’t hurt a bit. The SAT Is given to the stu dents and the scores are sent to the college of their choice upon applying to the college.
