Page 4 THE GRYPHON Friday, November 6, 1970 ATTENDS GREENVILLE WORK SHOP RMSH Students Venture Rotary Couple Outstanding Students To Greenville Saturday morning October 24 four RMSH students journeyed to Greenville Rose High to at tend a conference. Hie con ference was held from 9:00 to ! 10:30 and the discussion was centered around Human Rela tions and student government but was mainly for high schools to get acquainted. Many high schools were invited to attend, but only RMSH, Kinston, and Greenville Rose were present. Representing Senior High was Kathy Wright and Roland Valen tine for SRA, Thurbert Baker and Gerald Costen for Human Relations, and Mr. John Wool len advisor. The informal dis cussion began with Greenville Rose President Ernest Adams introducing everyone. The dis cussion was ignited when their Vice President began asking questions about elections, 'homecoming, selection of homecoming queens, and stu dent government. RMSH was made the center of attraction and most of the questions were directed to our representatives Conference who explained our method of election of using the Austra lian ballot and choosing the can didate by preference. Inter ested students listened earnest ly to the outcome of our suc cessful Homecoming and the beautiful queens representing both races from the Junior and Senior classes. SRA President Roland Valen tine said the conference made our representatives feel that RMSH was a "super-good school and it made them feel proud.” The Hi-Noc-Ar was . taken for examination by other conference members who were amazed and said it resembled ECU’s annual. The meeting was adjourned with Greenville Rose inviting RMSH to ano ther conference second semes ter. The trip was topped off with the representatives eating at Lum’s and then visiting various stores at Greenville. Presi dent Valentine concluded that he hopes for a conference to be held at RMSH second semester. Alfreda Hines and David Cordts, two seniors at Rocky Mount High, have been chosen as Rotary Couple for the month of November. The award is given to these two for their potential leadership qualities and past achievements. Alfred Hines Alfreda is an attractive, in- terlectual girl here at RMSH. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alphonso Hines of 436 Carolina Avenue. Alfreda has been very active in school and civic activities. During her junior year she served as se cretary of the Junior Class and a member of the Constitution Committee. She is presently serving as a semifinalist in the Seventh Annual National Achievement Program for Out standing Negro Students. Other positions she holds are mem ber of the National Honor So ciety, and of the Honorary Dra matics Club (the Masquers i This is her second year in dra matics. She is a member of the Good Sports Club. She will also play in the concert band this year. During the football season she was busy entertain ing the enormous crowds as a Color Guard. Alfreda stated, “the work was strenous but 1 enjoyed it.” Outside of school Alfreda is president of the TAG’S, a social club. Her hob bies include reading and play ing the piano. She Is very musically inclined and has play ed this particular Instrument several years. When first told she had been chosen as a Ro ar y Girl she stated, “An honor like this is hard to believe.” Our highly praised young lady plans to attend Hampton Insti tute and major in Speech Ther apy. David Cordts A great number of people may know David as a smiling warm hearted senior. Others may know him as the adding machine that keeps our school money In tact. By whatever character istics you may associate him with, he is truly an outstanding young man. Davis is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Allen F. Cordts. His father is presently serv ing as the Dean of Students at North Carolina Wesleyan College. He is a member of so many organizations and com mittees it staggers the mind. Only a few of them are as fol lows : member of the National Honor Society, the Quill and Scroll, which is a journalistic honor society, the Phalanx Club and a senior staff member in charge ofeditorlals for the Gry phon News Paper. He is pre sident of the local District and Conference of United Methodist Youth Fellowship, and trea surer of our SRA. He has received such honors as the Yale Book Award, which goes What are your plans for the upcoming year? If they’re any thing to compare with those of the Human Relations Commit tee, then you should expect a very busy year. The group this year is com posed of twelve hard working students here at Rocky Mount Senior High. Gay Wilgus and Thurbert Baker are co-chair men for the committee. They are gifted with such talented members as Juretta Ruffin, AUce Buffaloe, I ilUan Bronson, Karen Denson, Ruby Gibson, Carol Dice, Dennis Pittman, Craig Williams, Gerald Costen and Mike Barnhill. One event that has already been started by the group is “Thought’s for the week”. Each Monday you will see printed on the daily bulletin a thought that expresses some type of good wilL One of the members ■will also read it over the in- Honored to that person who will be able to achieve academic excellence in any college he attends. Da vid has also received the More- head Scholarship Award. What other contributions can you ask of a young man who has given so much to his school and com munity? Here is a student that has set his goals high in Ufe, and hopes to keep them that way. tercom. The student body is ur ged to participate in this pro gram by submitting thoughts they think are good. Conferences with different students will also be held dur ing the year. The purpose of this wlllbetodiscuss our school and its problems. The people will be interviewed by mem bers of the committee. Another big event planned for the year will be the establish ment of a “Human Relations Week”, During this time a great number of events will be held. The members felt that this was a good way to bring about more unity within our stu dent body. The week will close with a big assembly program on Friday. Talent from people In the school will be the source of entertainment. The committee feels they have planned a good year, and hopes the student body will give their whole hearted sup port. Rocky Mount Senior High is a good school, and the Hu man Relations Committee Is de lighted to work with such a ta lented student body.
