The Junior Gryphons have been led by Ronnie Hedgepeth, who gained over 200 yards aginst Kinston. Randy War rick, John £>inan and Charles Jones have aided the offensive punch. On defense, John Worsley, IJandy Warrick and Jerry Po well, Walt Pollard and, the en tire Gryphons defensive line have been outstanding. Warrick and Worsley have done fine jobs on pass defense. Warrick set up a T.D. against Kinston with a 20-yard interception. Wor sley scored a vital touchdown against Goldsboro when he grabbed the ball form a Golds boro player and scampered some 60-yards to paydirt. Po well and Pollard have furnished the bulk of the defensive line and both have seen steady act ion all year. Blow By Goldsboro Rocky Mount journeyed to GoUsboro and came back with a big victory. The Grj^hons were never behind and Golds boro was never in the game. Rocky Mount simply outclassed Goldsboro from the beginning when John Worlsey tooktheball from the Goldsboro runner and dashed 60 yards, for the touchdown.’ Jerry Powell and Walt Pol lard were outstanding for Rocky Mount and J. B. Warren and Randy Warrick also shined in the win. Beat Fayetteville For the first time in school's history, th^ Gryphons beat the J. V. team of, jiy^tev^ife 21- 14. Ronny Hedgepeth gained some 218 yards for the victors and scored twice in the win. Sonny Wooten booted the first field goal in the school’s his tory and it was a 27 yard boot. Wooten’s field goal was com plemented when Junior Tank Leonard booted a 27 yard field goal the same week. By MIKE RUFFIN DIAL 446-6166 YELLOW GAB Radio Cars — 24 hr. Service Union Bus Station Rocky Moont, N. C. Well, tonight ends the 1970 campaign for the Gryphons and It hasn’t been a bad one either. In fact, it has been one the most impressive this city has ever seen. The Gryphons enter tonight’s skirmish with a 8-1 record and have only lost to Goldsboro. All of Rocky Mount’s wins have been shatter ing defeats and the closest to Greenville by a score of 14-6. Rocky Mount’s most shattering win was to Durham Hillside 35-7. This town has also read about such scores as 33-0, 21-12, 19-15 and 31-14. So much about statistics and let’s look at a more heart breaking aspect of the game. Tonight 19 seniors play their fi nal skirmish on Senior High turf. For many of these young men, it will be the last time they will step on a football field to win or put on their war-torn cleats and definitely will be the last time they will wear the school colors of blue- black and gold! These young men are like thousands of other high schools seniors who for fi- ~ l^ocky Mount New Car Dealers Association Bel Air Chevrolet Bone International Caddell Motors Crest Ford, Inc. Davenport Motors Farris Motors, Inc. Flake B. Chipley Hoiwell Buick J. C. Friar Volkswagen John Vann Motors Ray Bandy Dodge nal time will be doing what they like most, playing football. Our seniors are special be cause they are ours and be cause they have set a fine standard for our future grid- ders to follow. They have won! To these 19 young men we the students of RMSH pay final tribute. So when tonight’s game is over, whether we win or lose, think how these young men will feel. They for some 9 odd years have been playing football and looking forward to playing foot ball for a high school team. Tonight they will have a tear of regret for it will be over for most of them. The GRYPHON newspaper staff pays tribute to these men and would like to wish them best of luck in future years. It would be fair for them to win tonight and to give some 6,000 people the happiness that they shared. HOME OF ROCKY MOUNT GRYPHONS Gryphon Grounds Should Be New Name Of Stadium The Rocky Mount Gryphons have nearly finished their sea son and are approaching the fi nal game with Wilson tonight. The Gryphons are 8-1 on the year andwillbegoingafter their ninth win tonight. Last year the Gryphoi^ played the Cyclones (now the Titans) at Fike Stadium which Wilson called “Cyclone Coun try”. Well the Titans have changed that name to “Titan Country”, and rightfully so. The Titans have lost only two games this year and enter to night’s clash with a 7-2 ledger. Wilson drowned Rocky Mount’s liopes when they lost to Golds boro last week, 14-12. Well, Wilson will encounter another tough game tonight and * this time it will take place at Municipal Stadium or should we say “Gryphons Grounds” and rightfully so since Rocky Mount has compiled an 8-1 ledger and have stomped such teams at Rocky Mount with such scores as 21-12, 14-6, 33-0, 35-7, and what ever tonight’s outcome will be will certain ly to go on the win column for Rocky Mount. A lot of people are say ing since Rocky Mount and Wil son both lost to Goldsboro that tonight’s clash should be a close one. But most people are de stined to believe that the fi nal score will be in favor of Wilson, since Wilson only lost to Goldsboro by two points and Rocky Mount lost by 11. Well maybe some should read the sport’s scores a little closer because the tides can turn the other way too, Wilson lost to Durham High School at Titan Country 6-3 while Rocky Mount stomped Durham 31-14 at Dur ham. S(^ tonight’s clash will be important but most of all it will be played at home, not at Municipal Stadium but at “Gry phon Grounds” home of the Rocky Mount Gryphons football team and stomping grounds for the Gryph’s, RMSH Grapplers Expecting Tough ’71 Season Ahead The Rocky Mount Senior High wrestling team is expecting a fine campaign this year. The squad Is under the direction of rookie mentor Phil Harris, whs- is also looking forward to the upcoming campaign. After one year one the sport in our school, there will be a great amount of experience. Last year’s squad had some fine prospects and they will all be returning to the mat. Last year’s squad will have seniors Doug Braswell, Craig Williams, Rod Hoell, and junior Ronny Lee. Braswell and Lee are the only returning wrest lers to have won in the 1970 campaign. Some possible pro spects to look forward to this year are junior Deacon Jones and senior Carson Robinson. The team will miss greatly the services of division II cham pion Ricky Leonard, Leonard was the only beaten once in 14 matches and that was the East ern 4-A Championship loss. The wrestling season begins shortly and all students and interested people are urged to support the program. TARRYTOWN MALL, ROCKY MOUNT, N, C. Keeper of the Linen Ltd.
