SUREDRT 1971-72 Cheerleaders left to right, Geneva Beattie, Robin Copley, Thelma Warner, Gwen Saunders, Pinky Dawes, LynCol- llns, Karen Kirkman, Yvonne Dew, Up the ladder, Debbie Wooten, Scotty Taylor, Joe Dorsette, Cheerleaders Are Elected For Coming School Year After the all-school assem bly on May 4, for cheerleader tryouts, RMSH students rushed back to their homerooms to make their selections for the twelve new 1971-72 Varsity Cheerleaders. The students voted for twelve girls—seven white and five black. If one didn't follow this procedure, his ballot was invalid. The results of the elec tion were Scotty Taylor, Senior, old member; Karen Kirkman, Senior, old member; Yvonne Dew, Senior; Pinkey Dawes, Senior; Lyn Collins, Junior; Thelma Warner, Junior; Jo Dorsett, Junior; Geneva Hat tie, Junior; Gwen Sanders, Ju nior; Debbie Wooten, Junior; Robin Copley, Junior; and Gloria Carney, Junior, This year, thirty six sopho mores and Juniors tried out. In the assembly, the girls came out in twelve groups of three. Each group did two cheers— HUDSON TYPEWRITER GO. ROYAL TYPEWRITERS — VICTOR ADDING MACHINES *17 Tarboro St. - Pbone 446-5131 “Red Hot", and "Great". The cheers were started by an old Varsity cheerleader. Then af ter all the girls had shown their talent, they were brought on again in two groups of eigh teen. This was done to give the students one last chance to decide which twelve girls they wanted to lead them in cheers next year. The cheer that the two groups did was “Victory”. After the assembly was over, all students returned to their homerooms and homeroom tea chers passed out ballots. Most students made their choices very carefully, since they rea lized that other schools often judge RMSH by the pep and spirit that the cheering squad has. All thirty six of these girls worked hard every afternoon al ter school during the w^k prior to the tryouts. The old Varsity cheerleaders taught them everything from the words of the cheers to how to yell and jump. All the girls, both old cheer leaders, and new girls trying out deserve a lot of recognition. They all did a great job. Next year, RMSH will have a squad that it can really be proud of.
