The Gryphons ended their season with a 5-5 conference record and a 12-8 overall record. Rocky Mount’s top hitter was Dennis Pittman wh^ batted around ,500 all year and Fete Thompson with ,370, Rocky Mount also had Mike Ruffin with a ,320, Sonny Wooten with a ,350 and Randy Warrick with a .310 average. Gryphon Netters Rejoice With Fine Record Posted Despite a closing lost to Gold sboro, Coach Ramey’s netmen ended their season on a winning note as they posted an overall record of 10-6 and a division record of 7-3. The divisional mark of 7-3 gave the netters a tie for second place withWil- son. Twenty-two teams met in the Eastern Sectionals this year held in Wilson. Mike Long and Frank Avent were eliminated In the second round, and Steven Bennett held his ground until the third round. Woody Rid dick and Reid Rhodes were beaten In the quarter finals of the Eastern Sectionals by the number two doubles team. The team effort of the Gryphon netters was not one of disappointment. Goldsboro and New Hanover tied for first place while Wilson took second and Rocky Mount third. Top seeded Lewis Hardy posted a fine season with an over-all record of 19-4. Hardy was the only Rocky Mount play er to advance to the state sec tionals, where he was elimin ated in the quarter finals by John Lucas of Durham, Hill side 6-0, 6-0, Lucas is the number 1 player in the South and Is number 13 in the na tion.
