Baby Gryphs Pick Up One Win,
One Tie, In Conference Action
The Wilson Jajrvees came
to Rocky Mount withanunbJem-
Ished record, but after they met
with the Baby Gryphs of RMSH,
they had fo settle for a tie
which could have easily been a
defeat, if not for a strong bench.
In the following game, the RMSH
Jayvees sent the Goldsboro
Cougar Junior Varsity limping
home in defeat. This particu
lar game was the precedent of
the Varsity game with Golds
boro, which was Homecoming.
The final score, a 36-0
slaughter.
Scoring in the Wilson game
started in the second period,
when on an option play, the
pitch-out from Tommy Warrick
to Delaslo Bartley clicked for
a 65 yard touchdown play, Bart
ley burned down the sidelines
toward paydirt on this play,
and for the two point conver-
slMi, he did the same only to the
o{qx>site side. The score was
now 8-0.
The next score came when a
punt was fumbled by the Gryphs,
giving Wilson the ball on the
25 yard line. From there, the
Mini Titans scored with Reggie
Smith doing most of the ground-
gaining. The two point conver
sion try was not good as Smith
was stopped while driving up
the middle, inches short of the
goal line. The half ended with
Rocky Mount in the lead, 8-6.
SECOND HALF ACTION
The second half saw the RMSH
JV’s mount a ten point lead
when Warrick threw a touch
down pass to Calvin Weeks.
Carlton Alston burst through a
gap in the defensive line, to
score on the PAT attempt.
The WilsonJV’s came to life
in the last quarter. Rocky Mount
was trapped deep in its own ter
ritory by a Wilson punt which
was downed on the five yard
Une. On fourth down, the Grs^h-
ons were forced to punt out of
their own endzone, but the kick
was blocked and Wllsonscored a
safety. Thescorewasthenl6-8.
Wilson scored once more
when Rocky Mount’s kick-ff
after the safety was returned
to the Baby Gryph’s 25 yard
line. After several carries.
Smith squirmed into the end
zone to score. Smith also ran
off-tacfcle for the conversion to
tie the score at 16-16-.
Both teams began using de
vious tactics to try to win late
in the last quarter. On fourth
and seven, the punt was faked
by RM, but the attemjrted pass
for first down yardage by War
rick was in complete. The final
gun sounded, and the Wilson
Jayvees left the field knowing
that they had tangled with a
gutty and hard-fighting Rocky
Mount squad.
A devastating defense and a
potent offense teamed together
as the Baby Gryphs over
whelmed Goldsboro’s Cats,
In the first period of play.
Rocky Mount put sixteen points
on the scoreboard. The points
of the game came when the de
fense recovered a fumble twenty
yards from paydirt. From
there, the offense rolled in for
six points within the opening two
minutes. The second opportuni
ty came when a poor iwnt was
recovered on the 40 3'ard line.
The offense cashed in on the
break for six more points.
Two other TD's came in the
second quarter, and the final
score was pushed through in the
last stanza of play. The players
making the touchdowns and ex
tra points were Delasio Bart
ley, Carlton Alston, Larry Kim
ble, and Tommy Warrick,
Following the game, the
coaching staff was overjoyed,
and it was hard for any Rocky
Mount fan not to be.

Personality Types Shown
By ‘Shooting The Rock’
Shades of Earl Monroe and
Jerry West! Basketball has
already become the sport to
play in gym, even though the
calendar reads late October,
which is usually the middle of
the football season.
Basketball, like most other
sports, provides an emotional
outlet. It can reveal to an Ob
server the true personalities
of the players. One may find
it a difficult chore to classify
all the participants, but basic-
ly there are just a few ma
jor classiflcations.
The major dividing point a-
mong players is the split be
tween those who have the talent
(whether overabundant or not)
to play, and those who seem
to be foreign even to the con
cept of attempting to throw a
round ball through a hoop.
Those who lack talent can usual
ly be singled out by recogniz
ing some of the following sym-
toms: the inability to drib
ble the ball, the shot that “miss
es everj^hing” (the goal, the
rim, the whole works), and the
fear of shootingwhen not guard
ed. In relationship to personali
ty, those who appear to lack
any coordination with a basket
ball may be just the opposite
In other matters. Many could
be classified as intellectuals
who excel in the classroom,
and not necessarilybnthe play
ing court. Of course, there
are those who just don’t care,
as long as they can get through
the day and leave by 3K)5.
Now we come to the players
who possess some talent. There
are those whose dreams of
stuffing the ball a la Lew Al-
clndor or hitting thirty foot
shots in the manner of Jerry
West are only too vivid. Indi
viduals of this sect have copied
the stars’ moves almost to
perfection, except that the shot
following the patented move is
errant. Some feel tliat this par
ticular group live in their dream
world of stardom, but it is ba-
sicaly sound to assume that
the members of this classifi
cation want attention, which ap
parently is lacking elsewhere.
Academically, these are poor
students, whose playing ability
is as high as their grades are
low.
Then, too, there are the play
ers who don’t regard "hitting
the hardwood” (playing basket
ball) as a specialized sport.
These young men try to put
the game Into a proper per
spective along with their other
activities. They are well-
rounded in sports as well as in
other areas. In the classroom,
these individuals are good solid
students.
Perhaps this group is the
largest of all, and it could pro
bably be sub-divided Into small
er sections. Then too, this
may also be the most desir
able. This is most likely true
since those in other classifi
cations fail to makegood marks
academically, but prefer to put
off worrying about It. After
all, Charlie Scott, Charlie Da
vis, and Lew Alcindor came up
from the ghetto areas to fame.
However, it is highly unlike
ly that this will happen with
too much consistency.
