Friday, December 17, 1971 THE GRYPHON Page 7 Grappler’s Season Appears Hopeful Hello Gryfans! It’s Gryphon grappler time! Here’s your friendly, kind, nice (and all that good stuff) sports report er with a few syllables aboit wrestling. Wrestling at Senior High in volves 13 individual contests with wrestlers ranging from little Freddy Williams at the 98 pound division to Terry Leo nard in the unlimited weight class. Terry Leonard is the heaviest wrestler at 215 pounds. Coaches Phil Harris and Stan Bastian have directed this year’s team to one tie and a loss. Each Individual contest consists of three 2 minutes periods. There are fourteen matches this year through Feb, 6 with the matches being held on Monday and Thursdays, In closing, Gry fans, we urge you to get out and support the wres tling team. ‘^TrashketbalL Anyone?” Cleveland Howard (30) goes up for two against Northern Nash last Friday night. His efforts were in vain as the Gryphs bowed 67-60. Gryph’s Smash Tarboro; Split Pair With Northern What does the average girl see when she goes to a basketball game? Deter mined, hard-working boys with an intense desire to win? No! Handsome, he roic basketball players with cute “kneeform” and good bods. Yesthese young ladies prance about so cializing with no interest in the game whatsoever, A cute date and a new dress go much farther in this crowd than a high point average. The Gryphs have opened their 1971-1972 basketball season with a 3 and 1 record thus far. The first victory came No vember 30 as the Gryphs po wered over Tarboro with an impressive 88 to 46 winat Tar boro, The next victory didn’t come so easy as RM managed only 72-70 victory over North ern Nash. It was a see-saw battle all the way with Cleve land Howard’s free throws pulling it out at the end. The Gryphs handed Tarboro ano ther trouncing December 7 as they marched to a 102 to 60 runaway win. This is the first time RM team has ever scor ed more than 100 points. The Gryphons winning streak was cut short Friday, Decem ber 10 as the netters traveled to Northern Nash. The Knights handed the Gryphons a con vincing 67-60 loss despite a bri lliant 28 point performance by Sophomore Phil Ford. North ern combined some hot shooting and good rebounding to emerge victories. This win places both teams in a tie for the informal Nash County title. The Gryphs must now settle down to the bu siness of winning their con ference crown. The Gryphons journey to New Bern Wednes day December 15 for action against the Bears, In a school as large as Se nior high varsity sports are highly publicized and support ed, There are, however, sport events which happen every day and go unnoticed (at least by the teachers). Here are a couple of the more popular. Trashketball is a local fa vorite. The object of the game is to place any lightweight, sph erical object (usually a wad of paper) into a basket (trashcan). This may be done by any num ber of shots ranging from the good ’ole jump shot to the re liable “bank off the teacher’s desk shot. Any number of pla yers may participate as the only reward is a solid, hollow “ker plunk”, Missing your basket usually results in picking up the “ball” and settlyin oor a simple 2 foot dunk shot, (girls can even ring this one) Technical fouls may be called by any faculty member and us ually are in the form of a 1 hour detention notice! OLD MAID, This game ori ginated in the classroom but enjoys most of its popular lity in the school library. Up to four players may participate in this game as that is the size of a normal “study” (ha) group. Each player’s “hand” consists of the material he has brought into the library to study. Each participant plays his hand (that is, he tells dirty jokes, he talks about his hot date this weekend, etc,) until he is caught with the OLD MAID. This hap pens when Mrs. Bailey’s shifty eyes focus upon him and he is “playing his hand.” It is thr WESTWOOD LUMBER CO. ACROSS FROM SENIOR HIGH ROCKY MOUNT LANES And Restaurant “GREAT PLACE FOR A DATE” ough personal experience that I would advise the player at this time to use the oldest of tricks —the bluff. He should imme diately pick up the nearest any thing and commence real, live, genuine studying. (Make sure the book or whatever is right side up or else you’ve blown the whole thing) You know the bluff has worked when she re sumes her work. You know the bluff hasn’t worked when you find yourself back in the study hall later that period!! Cross-Country Season Ends In Disappointment The RMSH cross - country team has completed their meets for this year. This season was a very disappointing one as out runners dropped their three meets. To Wilson twice and then one to South Edg^ecombe, The Eastern sectionals were held at Durham October 29, There were over 30 schools participating with around 200 runners. Grimsley High School in Greensboro took first place, A regular cross-country meet consists of 1 large race of 2 1/2 miles. Any team may place only 5 runners. The lower a runner places the higher the number of points, i.e., 1st place -1 point, 2nd place-2 points. The team with the lowest to tal points wins. The Gryph’s disappointing season may be attributed to a poor turnout. There were six guys that turned out. They were: Benjie Toler, Layne Dil- dy, Leon Robbins, Nell Nelson, Peter Tapia and James Cobbr Students are encouraged to try out next year.
