PAGE 4 THE GRYPHON Friday, April 21, 1972 \ This month’s Rotary Couple are shown here. They are Gary Knight and Geraldine Rowland. April Rotary Couple: An Excellent Selection Improvements In Library May Better Study Habits By RUTH WALKER Prom Problems Cause Butterflies In All Involved Ah, the problems of the Ju nior-Senior. Even with the great excitement and happiness it causes, the trials and tri bulations are almost too much to bear. First of all, comes the pro blems of "escorts”. The girls are crossing their fingers and hoping their “Someone Special” will invite them to the Prom. Another problem they face is how rrt say “no” if someone asks them whom they aren’t really wild about, and that takes some courage. The boys have the same prob lem, except in reverse. Instead of hoping to be asked, they bare the greater problem of digging up the courage to ask. The boys have a "certain someone” too, and they have to decide whether to ask her, or to ask someone whom they know likes them. It’s a trial and error situation, and the chances run high. Next come the problem of at tire. In this area the problem for boys tux? Or maybe a double-breasted gray suit with flare pants a set of lep a pink shirt and white tie? The girls dresses present an even lar ger selection. Formal, semi- formal, informal-blue, green, yellow, pink—empire waisted, long sleeves, short sleeves, no sleeves—hi-neck, low neck, V- nick, back, no back. The lists and choices are endless! and that age-old problem of not be ing able to decide because there is such a large selection shows itself again. After all the questions, clo thes, chosen, and minds make up, the big event has finally come! So, relax, and enjoy your Junior-Senior.' Geraldine Rowland and Gary Knight are the fine selection for April’s Rotary Couple. A Rotary Couple is chosen for outstanding leadership and ser vice to the school. Needless to say this couple is an excel lent selection. Gary Knight There are few people who do not know Gary and the great job he has done for RMSH, Gary is always busy with var ious school clubs. These in clude the FCA, the Mono gram Club, Social Committee, Recreation Committee, and a- bove all Gary is the Vice Pre sident of the Senior Class, Gary is not only a busy bee around school but works hard as a member of the Elegants Club which is a social group. He also attends St. Marks Me thodist Church. Gary plans to go to Fayette ville State College in the fu ture. Gary’s mother, Mrs, Lil lie Knight, of 909 Westend must be very proud of him. Geraldine Rowland Geraldine Rowland, daughter of Mr, and Mrs. H. T. Row land, Route 4, is a well de serving Rotary girL Geraldine is very active around RMSH. She is a member of the Judos Club, National Honor Society, SRA, the President’s Cabinet, she is co-chairman ofthe House and Grounds committee, a color guard, and a member of the Wind Ensemble. Geraldine has also won awards in the All State Concert and Symphonic Bands. Geraldine may be quite busy at school but she still finds time td be-on the Advi sory Board at her church. Geraldine has been accepted at two colleges. She was ac cepted at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she plans to study physchology. At North Carolina State Uni versity her plans would be to study Mathematics. Geraldine has quite an impressive per sonality which radiates warmth and understanding. There has always been a noise problem In the library. This year the problem has be come worse. It has become a place to socialize instead of work. I went to study one day when it was impossible to con centrate with the confusion in the library. H people cannot go to work, they should be bar red from the library for the remainder of the year. There should be no second chances for good behavior, A rule of this nature should change the type of people that go. It would be nice, if some type of audio-visual depart ment could be developed simi lar to the language lab. Stu dents could go to the confer ence rooms and listen to infor mation of tapes. Films could also be used for study by the students themselves. At Senior High, there are several tele vision courses. When these programs are taped, maybe they could be saved for other stu dents to use as references. It would be very helpful if the library had access to pam phlets. Books are not recent enough In some cases. Maga zines are not detailed enough. Some English classes are al lowed to order paper back books. It would be better if the entire school could order these books through the library. In this way, students could read more contemporary books. It would also help the librarians to see what students enjoy read ing. A greater variety of news papers needs to be taken. Sub scriptions to the nation’s top newspapers; as well as the state’s, would expose the stu dents to awlder variety of news, I know all of these additions are costly, A book rental would bring in some money. Spe cial books could be rented for longer periods of time. Each month a book list could appear on the bulletin. This would remind the students there are some good books, and it would inform them about the available books. The listwould consist of the ten most popular books on the school library. Any time there are new books, a list could be printed. The students should be Informed of any improvements in their lib rary. Fond Memories Of Old Annuals Once upon a night, as I was searching through my attic, I came upon one of my oldest and dearest possessions. It was older than old, rarer than rare and touching memories sprang from it’s dusty cover and yel lowed pages. It was my last year’s Hi Noc Ar. Turning the pages slowly, fa miliar faces met my eyes and warmed my heart. But as I began to associate "before” pictures with the “after” pic tures, or, as they are now, un controllable fits of laughter be sieged me. Take for instance, Mr, X. Mr. X. is a beautiful person, with long hair, army jackets, and a very faint mustache. His picture last year looked like a disaster area. Crew cut, suit, with a ridiculous grin. Another example was Miss Z. Beautiful this year, eyes bluer than the sky, hair blonder than the sun, and waist size 23 1/2, Her picture showed dark hair, green eyes, with thick-lensed glasses, and waist size—well, let’s just say she was conside rably rounder. Glancing through the rest of the pictures, my aching sides almost splitwith more laughter. Finally my laughter was quick ly subdued. Taking one more look at the disgusting picture, I slowly closed the book and put it away. Depression set tled over me as 1 thought of that picture. It had been my own. Poem I gaze steadily at life. Moving continually and never enduring quiet. We breathe, yet not to live. We look, but not to see People streaked with muddy tears Battered by the storm of life Serving their purpose, but what else? Crumpled faces existing daily in dull facades. Shout! Break through dust and search for the horizon. Life Is running. Quick! Stained windows open wide and let sunshine emerge On your blackened sills , . .
