Perryman, a junior of Rocky Mount Senior High School, recently won first place in the Northeastern Divi sion American Legion Oratori cal Contest in Louisburg. Third Place In Ashboro Perryman advanced to the State Oratorical Contest which was held in Asheboro, and re ceived a third-place rating on the state leveL His first speech was made concerning the United States Constitution, He was awarded a gold medal and a $50 savings bond from the American Le gion for his winning performan ce. For his participation on the state level in Asheboro Perry man received another gold me- daL Receives Check At the 53rd anniversary din ner of the Rocky Mount Amer ican Legion post this week, Perryman represented a gift of $25 for his performance in the oratorical caontest, Perryman’s training in pub lic speaking developed through a Public Speaking class, in structed by Mrs. Ruby Sharpe, at Rocky Mount Senior High, The RMSH Edsonians, direc ted by Mr, William Rawls, com peted in a district drama fes tival held at the College of the Albemarle in Elizabeth City on March 25 and won seven top awards. There were five district fes tivals held by the Carolina Dra matic Association sponsored by the Carolina Playmakers. Any play receiving a top award was invited to attend the state fes tival in Chapel HiU. In their session RMSH stu dents received seven out of nine awards. They received one a- ward in theatre arts, two awards in play production, and four acting awards. “Fables for Fun,” consist ing of three short fables: The Brementown Musicians, Henny Penny, and the Fisherman and His Wife, receivd adistinguish- ed award in play production. Only plays receiving a dis tinguished award are invited to state competition in Chapel HilL This play also received ana- ward in theatre arts for out standing costumes. Also, for the same play, three members of the cast received acting a- wards. These students were Connie Maxwell for her portrayal of Goosle Poosie, and the fisherman’s wife, Richard Newman for his portrayal of the ass, the fox and the fish erman, and Bill Searcy for his portrayal of the duck, the Cat, and the fish. All other members of the cast, Sam Carico, Pam Wat son, Steve Parker, and Amy Maxwell, received praise form the judges. “No Snakes in This Grass” was the second production by RMSH students. This play also received a distinguished award in play production. The cast consisted of Gwen Sanders, Keith Thompson, and Richard Newman. Richard received his second “outstanding actor” a- ward for his performance a;{ Adam.
