FRBDAY, MAY 5, 1972 THE GRYPHON PAGE 5 Netters Defeat Rampants, Drop Match To Cougars The Goldsboro tennis squad rapped the GryjAon netters 4-2 in a conference match. Both number one singles man Reid Rhodes and No. 2 Steve Ben nett, fell to defeat. Tommy Dill Vnd John Worsley were the only victorious Gryphs, A shuffle of the lineup due to numerous challenging matches seemed to greatly increase the Gryphon netters’ effectiveness as they destroyed to Rampant netters, 8-1, the only loss com ing in the number three doubles match, where Proctor and Syn- der defeated Lucas and Hutchis- son, 8-5, The score does not complete ly tell the whole story of the match, since both the number one singles and the number two doubles were very close. Stephen Bennett, owner of his newly acquired number one seating, had difficulty getting past A1 Winn, losing the first set 6-1, but he then came back in fine style, defeating Winn 6-3, 6-2. A pleasant surprise came as Teele Rawls, playing at the number six singles spot, won his match over Bob Higgins in his debut as a singles player. Coach George Ramey ex pressed pleasure with the team’s victory, which moved them to a 3-2 record over-all and an unblemished conference record with their Greenville win. Your name & Address School Kair.e & Grade I SPORTS I LIGHTS By RAY BRINN Looking for a change in the usual form of Sportslights, I went back and glanced through the old files of the BLACK BIRD, the GRYPHONS prede cessor, to find out what was happening in the RMSH sport ing world twenty years ago. ' "Tictured in the May 13, 1952 issue are the RMSH track and baseball teams. The track team, bare-chested and short- haired, are shown arm-over- arm in a “we got togetherness on this team” fashion. The diamondmen in the May 23, 1940 issue were showing off their skinned heads and baggy uni forms, typical of that era. Leading Blackbird hitter was Budley Whitley, who alter 10 games had a ,480 batting ave rage. Many students at RMSH remember Mr. Whitley more for being principle eA Edwards Junior High, In another of the 1952 Is sues, the Wilmington Wild cats put one on the Birds. Quoted from the issue: “RMSH’s Blackbird baseball team dropped their ninth game in ten starts to the Wilming ton Wildcars in an Eastern AAA conference game last Thurs day, Burt Grant, a right hand er, pitched a five-hitter for the Cats. Sonny Jergensonknocked a 350 ft. home run along with a single to lead the hitting. Jergenson, better known now as quarterback for the Wash ington Redskins, was then en joying sporting game fame at Wilmington High School. Well, that’s the way it was way back then, and I hoped you’ve enjoyed reading RMSH history as much as I have en- . oyed writing it. Tracksters Mac Knfght, Leon Robbins, Nell Nelson, and Keith Lanier sprint around the RMSH track following their third place finish to Wilson and Kinston, The Gryph thinclads fell only nine points behind Kinston, one of their best showings of the season. Daughtridge’s Two-Hitter Key Gryphon Victory Behind the two-hit pitching of left-hander Larry Daughtrid- ge the Gryphs pulled out a 2-0 victory over Goldsboro, The shutout win, led by a second inning surge, gave Rocky Mount the lead in Division Two. With one out in the second, Larry Daughtrldge singled to start things rolling. Earl Grumpier errored when Ran dy Wunderlich weakly hit a grounder to Grumpier, and in trying to throw Elton Madre out at second, threw the ball In to the outfield, Howard Mc Cullough then grounded Into right for a single, and Madre rushed home when the right fielder couldn’t field the balL Randy Wunderlich scored when James Lewis made a sacri fice bunt down third base line, thus giving Rocky Mount the winning two runs, ~ US'the sixth inning, Golds boro posed their biggest scare with tying runs on base, Ron nie got to first base when Daughtrldge dropped Sonny Wooten’s throw to him cover ing the bag. Narron struck out, and Weagley popped out to second. Alan HoUowell drew a walk, but the side was re tired when Randy Warwick fiel ded a fly ball to left. Both sides were retired In the seventh, and RM, with the help the New Bern Bears who defeated Wilson Flke, gained sole possession of first place in Division Two.
