New Ideas Of Teaching Discussed At District 12 Teachers’ Meeting The third annual convention of the District 12 of the North Carolina Association of Educa tors was conducted at Flke Se nior High School, Wilson on No vember 7, 1972, District 12 is composed of Edgecombe, Halifax, Johnston, Nash, North Hampton, and Wil son counties. Its officers are President, Mrs, Beth Ward, Roanoke Rapids; Vice Presi dent, Cemon Willlamston, En-' field; Secretary, Mrs, Frances K, McNeil, Smithfleld; District Director, Mrs. Hazel G, Sor rell, Benson, The General Session consist ed of musical entertainmeat from 9:00-9:30 a,m. The Invo cation, greetings, recognition of guests, report from NCAE and the address took place in the auditorium from 9:30-10:30, RMSH Receives Honors RMSH received two honors at the annual North Carolina Asso ciation of Student Councils con vention at Reynold's High Sch ool in Winston - Salem Novem ber 11-13, Eight RMSH students attend ed with advisor Miss Kate Parks Kitchin, Attending the con vention as RMSH delegates were S. O. President Johnny Dinan, S, O, Vice-President Steve Br aswell, S, O. Secretary Crystal Gagnon, Paula Mur rill, JoDor- sett, Lynn Carter, Mike Knight, and Wadye Morton, Steve Braswell ran for Pre sident and Mike Knight ran for first Vice-President, The can didates for the offices gave their campaign speeches Sunday morning, after which the dele gates of the three North Caro lina districts separated for dis trict meetings. Discussion gro ups met Sunday afternoon to stress the Importance of lea dership responsibilities and student council work. The re sult—Mike Knight was elected first Vice-President of theNC- ASC. RMSH’s second honor was be stowed upon the entire student body for outstanding student participation throughout the year. RMSH's “Honor Coun cil” certificate, presented to President Johnny Dinan, was one of four certificates given to the outstanding of the 242 member schools. This is con sidered a top honor in the state student council and this is the second consecutive year that RMSH has received It. Mike Knight, a junior at RM SH, who was elected Vice - President of the NCASC, Is presently the Vice - President of the NCASC Eastern Dis trict. There were three group ses sions, which consisted of group discussion, which were held from 10:30-12:00. The fol lowing were some of the topics of the discussions: federal le gislation, PACE, unification, review of NEA Convention, ten ure, career education, the “open school” concept, human relations, Intra-faculty rela tions, the public Image of edu cation, dealing with the alien ated child, reading Improve ment, and administrator’s role In schools today. There were five divisions of the attendants at the meeting who met and had lunch. These were classroom teachers, prin cipals, retired school person nel, superintendents, super visors, and directors of In struction, After lunch, there were departmental meetings and dis cussions, The Educational Me dia Department discussed the "Right to Read”, led by S,A, Festa, Director of Instruction al Material, Burlington, The English Department discuss ed "Reflections on the Appro aches to Teaching English,” led by Dr. Sim O, Wilde, Jr,, Associate Professor to Educa tion, N. C, Weslej^n College, Rocky Mount, The Music De partment had a demonstration. The Occupational Education, Department discussed "Imple mentation of Future Trends and Techniques of Occupational Ed ucation”, led by Carl D, White hurst, State Department of Pub lic Instruction, The Pupil Per sonnel Services Department discussed "New Dimensions for the Personnel Worker,” The Science Department had a bus iness session. The Special Ed ucation Department discussed "Methods and Materials for Teaching the Educable Men tally Retarded,” Exliibits were in the gymna sium and could be seen from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p,m. Forty six members of the Rocky Mount Distributive Edu cation Department attended the annual District 3B Leadership Conference at South Johnson Senior High School on Thurs day, November 9. RMSH was represented by the largest delegation in atten dance, having five official de legates. These were David Brantley, Mary Alice Whita ker, William Relk, Randy Hut chinson, and Barry Thorpe. There were eleven schools in competition at the conven tion. Each school was allow ed to enter two candidates for offices and one coi\testant in each contest. LaVern Williams was elec ted District Secretary - Trea surer. She will represent the RMSH D.E. Club In the State competition in March. Stephanie Farmer was elect ed District Parliamentarian. Tom Dickens won first place in the District Job-Interview contest. He will compete at the Sate convention also. Pam Southerland won first place in the District Miss DE- CA Contest. She will serve as hostess at the State Conven tion along with Miss DECA win ners from other districts. This is the second conse cutive year the RMSH D. E. Club has won so many honors at the convention. DAVID JORDAN AND JOHN DINAN, Morehead Semi-finalists. Semi-Finalists Announced In Morehead Competition Three RMSH students, David Jordan, John Dinan, and alter nate Bruce Alexander, were recently announced as repre sentatives of Nash County In the District I competition for the Morehead Scholarship Award, David Jordan is the son of Mr. and Mrs, W. G. Jordan, He has been active In Student Government, school clubs, pho tographer for the school year book, Boy Scout activities, and has managed the basketball team, John Dinan is the son of Mr, and Mrs, John A. Dinan, He has compiled an outstand ing academic record and has been involved In many extra curricular activities, Bruce Alexander is the son of Mr. and Mrs, J. D. Alexander, He not only has an outstanding academic record but he has be come involved in many student activities. The candidates will now ap pear before a District Selection Committee for further evalua tion. The nominees chosen by the District Committee in turn recommended to the Central Committee at Chapel Hill for personnel interviews. The Morehead Award is an honorary award accompanied by a grant of money that is used to finance the recipients un dergraduate study at the Uni versity of North Carolina at Chapel HilL It is renewable for four years. A total of 116 Morehead Sch olars may be selected to enter the undergraduate school of the University of North Car olina each year. Sixty nomin ees come to Chapel Hill each spring for final screening and selection by the Central Com mittee, RMSH Seniors Participate In ECU Weekend Three RMSH Seniors, Sidney Nelson, Ray Brinn, and William Bennett attended East Caro lina’s Universitys’ scholar ship weekend October 14-16 at the University campus at Greenville. While participating in the we ekend, the three met with uni versity professors, fellow stu dents from throughout the state, and were entertained at the ECU - Citadel football game. Further entertainment was pro vided at a concert featuring the J. Geils Band in Minges Coli seum the evening of October 16. Featured was Dr. Leo Jen kins, President of the Univer sity at the annual Awards Sup per Sunday evening, Brinn, giving his views ofthe weekend stated "It was really a beneficial trlft finding out what the school has to offer while at the same time getting a taste of college life.
