TUESDAY, DECEMBER 19, 1972 Members of Drug Task Force participate In rap session while attending drug workshop at Super intendent's Office. Dr. Currin Attends Division Winter Conference Dr. Ben F. Currin, Superin tendent of Rocky Mount City Schools, attended the North Ca rolina Association of Educa tors’ Winter Conference of the Superintendents Division in Durham December 5-7 at the Durham HoteL During the conference, which was attended by superintendents from all over the state, the prin cipals heard various speakers from throughout the state and nation speak on the changing roles of the state and federal government toward education. The leadoff address was ma de by Lieutenant Governor - el ect James Hunt, who spoke to the group on the first day of the conference. The keynote ad- dresss, “Signs of the Times,” was delivered by Dr. A. Craig Phillips, State Superintendent. The conferencewasoneoftwo yearly held under the auspices of the North Carolina Associa tion of Educators. “The main purpose of the conference,” the local superin tendent stated, “was for the su perintendents to get an idea of the trends and goals of educa tion both state-wide and nation ally and the effect of the elec tion on our local system,” Dr, Currin also brought up the point that many factions disagree with the primary goals of education, such as the state andtheNCAE, “And of course,” he continued, “we haven’t had a Republican governor In our seventy years.” While on the trip, the super intendent also dropped In on the State Board of Controls to ap peal the ruling putting Rocky Mount in a new conference alignment athletically. “Unfor tunately, the request was de nied, but we do feel we have scheduled many of the teams we had wished to play anyway. We do play teams from Raleigh and Durham, for example, and we still have one open date.” While at the conference. Id eas were examined as to the behavior of the GeneralAssem- bly and their views toward ed ucation. The workshop was one of many training sessions in which the Task Force partici pates for preparation In warn ing other students about the dan gers of drugs. During the year different members will conduct “rap sessions” with students on the junior high leveL The Monday meeting helped to educate the Force and also helped old members become acquainted with the new force members. After several “get- acquainted” games, the Force Vica Qub Holds Barbecue Sale The annual barbecue sale of the Vica Club has recently been announced as being a big suc cess. The sale was successful due to the increase in the number of sales made this year. It was sponsored to raise money for the Vica Club employee - em ployer banquet which will be held in the spring. This year along with the students and em ployers, special guests and some businessmen from the community will be invited to the banquet. Students sold 708 plates from Parkers’ B-B-Que, and the members selling the largest nu mber of tickets will be treat ed to a steak supper later on. The Vica Club wishes to ex tend their appreciation to Mr. Doug Sauls, manager of Par ker’s B-B-Que for participating in their annual barbecue sale. whei burgc charco! Han HAMBURGER Rocky Mount held several group discussions on drugs and their effects on today’s youth. The session en ded with a delicious barbecue dinner at Parkers. Participating in Monday’s session were co-captains Ray Brlnn and William Farmer, a- long with Force members Lau ra Allsbrook, David Jordan, Jo Anne Boykin, Wilton Gay, Bill Searcy, Mike Knight, Beverly Whitehurst, Luwanda Dicklns, Gail Parrish, Debbie Harvey, Chris Weatherly, Donna Joy ner, Sara Collier, AlphonsoMc- Knight, and Caroline Wiggins. Hi-NoC"Ar Receives First Place Rating At Columbia Press The Hi-Noc-Ar has receiv ed word from-Columbia Scho lastic Press Assoc, that the 1971-72 Hi-Noc-Ar was given a 1st place rating. Last year’s Hl-Noc-Ar was sent to Columbia Scholastic Press Association to be judg ed on Its layout, content cov erage, basic Idea of theme, copy, and photography. It was the first time in three years that a Hi-Noc-Ar from Rocky Mount Senior High School has been sent to be Judged. LAST YEAR’S STAFF According to Miss Murchi son, some of the best points about last year’s Hi-Noc-Ar were the original theme, color photography, art work by Jim Harris and Janet Fish, design, and layout. Last year’s co editors were Margaret Taylor and Anita Chadwick. The other staff members were business manager, Pam Jefcoat, adverti sing managers. Bob Dozier and Lee Marshburn, and circula tion managers, Rahn Barnes and Ruble Gibson. The annual was dedicated to Mr. R. D. Arm strong, NEW STAFF Miss Murchison said that the staff this year was working very hard to give the students a book of which to be proud. She also added that Ruth Walk er and Leon Robbins were do ing a tremendous job as co editors. The Hi-Noc-Ar will a- galn be sent to Columbia Sch olastic Press Association if the staff is pleased with the book. When asked If she had any quotes, Mrs. Murchison repli ed: “We would like to thank all of the students at Rocky Mount Senior High for suppor ting us with 1,025 subscrip tions. We will work as hard as we possibly can to gir each student an annual that he will enjoy to the fullest.
