TUESDAY, DECEMBER 19, 1972 THE GRYPHON PAGE 3 Questions Bh*. Scxbri All my life, ^ !•--ih:. I’ve looked up to you. I’ve asked you questions. , -r “Mommy, where do battles come from?” “Daddy, what makes tlie sun come up?” I’ve always asked questions, and you always had answers. Who What When Where. . . Until one day I asked a ques tion, and you couldn’t answer it. You just stood there, with a blank look on your faces, not knowing, or even compre hending, the answer. You, the wise ones. The respected. The Parents, of the world Who Know All, Couldn’t even answer my one, little question. And that short, simple question was: “WHY?” When I think of you, I think of a field of wild daisies, being blown by the wind, and chastened by the sun. I think of a lonely stretch of beach, white sand reflecting the orange setting sun, with the waves gently lapping at our feet. I think of, holding In nervous hands a pale blue, fragile robin’s egg, and watching it hatch; witnessing a miracle, right before our eyes. When I think of you, I think of a million things, all more beautiful than the one before it, But none more beautiful than you. —Someone who cares Switchboard House In Great Danger Of Qosing Down About three months ago there was an article in this paper telling of a drug abuse infor mation, rap house type thing . called Switchboard, You may ■ recall that the article stated^ “ , . . call Switchboard or vi sit the house. You will find a friendly interested person to rap to, or give you references to get the help you want,” If you have called Switchboard in the past few weeks you have probably found that promised friendly voice to be a long string of unanswered telephone rings. This is due to the inade quacy of the house facilities and the lack of interested and responsible trained staff mem bers. As of now. Switchboard has two main problems, money and people. The director of Swit chboard, Eddie Baysden, is now in the process of trying to plan another training session for In terested people who would like to become Switchboard staff members. Switchboard needs interested people who are will ing to work and could really get something out of helping other people. Switchboard is not doing a fantastic job right now, but if enough people were willing to become good staff members, maybe Switchboard could bloom into a city-wide drug abuse help and information center. Which is what this town really needs If we are to rid oursel ves of the growing abuse of hard drugs. If you are really interested In helping other people, or if you just have a lot of extra time on your hands and think that you could really enjoy this type of volunteer work get into Switchboard, “ClaM, I’ve been asked to make the following announce* ment.. 129 Winstead Avenue West End Plaza 00 AM YOU Human Relations Couple Brighten December Days Switchboard 415 Lexington Street Drug Problems, Problem Pregnancy, Parent Hassles, or just someone to talk with call 446-1816 or 446-1817 If you’re into helping people, get into Switchboard. Band Plays For Mighty Gryphons The Rocky Mount Senior High School Band is a vital part of our school. It Is a precision drill unit that performs intricate formations in which precise timing is re quired, Practice was on most Tuesday and Thursday nights under the supervision of Mr, John Sykes and Mr, Charles Woods. The color guard and maj&r- ettes are two special divisions of the band. The color guard, composed of sixteen flash flags, four honor flags, six rafles, and two commanders, began practice a week before school started. The members worked with the band performing mi litary drills. Selection based on individual qualities and aca demic skills. In order to keep the beat, a sixteen member drum squad played a variety of cadences. These were played continually In parades and performances.
