Woollen To Take Trip
One of RMSH’s teachers, Mr,
John Woollen, will be taking a
trip to Pakistan from July 2 to
August 20 In an effort to l>e-
come more knowledgeable in A-
sian culture.
The Intercultural Understan
ding Trip Is sponsored by UNC
Greensboro and is funded by
the Federal Government and
Paskistanl Government, The
country of Pakistan offers an
excellent location for Asian stu
dy because the country is small
enough to cover all of its parts
and religions.
Mr. Woollen, along with 15
others, has been taking a class
at UNC-Greensboro every Sat
urday to prepare him for the
trip. He, along with the others,
will be the first group of high
school teachers to visit Pakis
tan since the Indian-Pakistan
War.
The trip will offer a chance
for Mr, Woollen to see many
world-famous cities. On the
way to Pakistan his plane will
have stopovers in London and
Istanbul, While in Pakistan he
will visit the cities of Lahore,
Karachi, and Islamabad, Pa
kistan’s capital. Also, he
will visit the Himalayain Mo
untains and from points will be
able to see into Russia and
Afghanistam.
Although Mr. Woollenwillas-
sociate with the Pakistani peo
ple he will stay in the “better”
hotels.
Mr.'Woollen says of the trip,
“It will be a totally different
experience,” and It will help
him in teaching a course in S,
E, Asia next year.

Joanne Boykin and Gordon
Vestal, two rising seniors have
been selected to attend the Boys*
and Girls’ State Seminars,
sponsored by the American Le
gion, Donna Joyner and Bill
Roebuck were chosen as alter-
nsites.
Boys’ State will take place
at Wake Forest University and
Girls’ State at the University
of North Carolina at Greens
boro. The program Is design
ed to teach city, county and
state governments to outstan
ding North CaroUna students.
Each of these students will be
placed into one of two equal
proportions to learn of gov
ernment techniques.
Careful selection of all of
these seminar students is made
through their outstanding abi
lities in leadership, charac
ter, scholarship, and service.
Requirements include being a-
lert, enthusiastic, congenial,
honest, and dependable,
Joanne is a member of the
Drug Task Force, Hi-Noc-Ar
Staff, the Good Sports Club, Jr.-
Sr. Invitations Committee and
has held various homeroom of
fices, In her spare time she
enjoys bicycle riding, swim
ming and art. She is the dau
ghter of Mr, and Mrs, Ander
son Boykin of 1312 Hill Street,
Gorton Vestal is on the Stu
dent Advisory Council, the So
cial Committee, Jr,-Sr, Invi
tations Committee, and a mem
ber of the National Honor So
ciety, His hobbies include wa
ter skiing, camping, and hunt
ing. He is the son of Mr,
and Mrs. Gorden Vesal, Jr,, of

Several RMSH seniors have
learned since our last issue of
financial aid that they will re
ceive next year, Sidney Nelson
has received a Phillips Petro
leum scholarship which will en
able him to receive $2400 over
a four year period. Sharron
Skipper has received a Sally
Station Scholarship to Vas-
sar College, and Lossie Deans
was named as a recipient of a
R. J. ReynoMs Scholarship to
Winston Salem State Univer
sity, Karen Wingo has receiv
ed an Albemarle Presbyterian
Women of the Church Scholar
ship in the amount of $150,
while William Farmer will re
ceive $1000 yearly for the next
four years at Johnson C, Smith.
Michael Joyner received theH,
C, Lowder Scholarship In the
amount of $500 from Arling
ton Street Baptist Church, and
Cameron Privott has received a
North Carolina Scholarship In
the amount of $1550 and a De
signated Scholarship in the a-
mount of $150 to Wake Forest
University.
Edgecombe Tech will offer
several courses for students
graduating this year at its Roc
ky Mount campus. Typewriting
I and n will be offered two
days a week for two hours dai
ly. Shorthand I and n will be
offered two days a week for
two hours for a cost of only
$10,00, Speedreading is being
offered four days a week at no
cost. Registration will be held
on June 11 at 11:00, Interest

duation have already become
evident throughout the city and
the surrounding area. Signs
have been prominently displa
yed at the corner of Nash and
Mayo streets as well as on the
island at the City Lake, Nor
thern Nash has also felt the
subtle effect of some RMSH
