PAGE 2 THE GRYPHON SEPTEMBER 26, 2973 Welcome Sophomores Among the noise and bustle that usually accompany a new school year, many new faces can be seen around campus and in the halls of RMSH. Although we miss the senior class which was graduated last year, we have a new sophomore class to replace it. Sophomores are never hard to recognize. They are the ones who circle the school twice looking for &e gym, usually without luck. They are always the victims of “razing” from the up perclassmen; especially during assemblies when Sophomores climb to the top of the bleachers to hear all the “Sophomore jokes.” Although the sophomores are laughed at frequently, they do play a very important role in our school too. Just as the Juniiors and Seniors, the S(H>homores help make RMSH what it is today. It is the responsibility of the Sophomores to get involved in school activities and clubs and to maintain the fine reputation RMSH has now. Student participation is important in keeping our school so wtstanding. So, to all of the new students, get involved and really find out what’s happening. Live up to the saying “I’m so glad I go to Senior High!” The Dress Code The students of RMSH are really fortunate to have such an unrestricted code to follow on a “proper” dress dress code. The code has allowed students to express their “individuality” by permitting long hair, short hair, jeans, shorts, tank tops, midis, masix, and minis. It would seem that one may wear nearly an ything he wanted - if it could cover his body sufficiently. Lately, with the “no-halters” restriction, students questioned their “fr^om” to dress as they please. The administration felt students sometimes were not dressed ina manner most becoming for schoolwear. Also, some students let their own desires take precedence over those of over students. They did not concern themselves with how their clothes might affect other students and their study habits. Although there were some objections to the restriction, it is to be respect^. RMSH is judged by the appearance of its students and we certainly want to uphold our reputation of superiority in the eyes of others. Even though one should be comfortable in his school attire he should not become too “extreme” in his dress that he hampers other. Another Summer Gone..” Does it seem that your summer vacation was all of 80 days? Well, stop dreaming, it’s time to break down and study for another school year. Studying and learning are two different things. For some, the “art of study” takes time, effort, and more brains than one claims he has. Then there are others who can study for hours and not even learn something as simple as 1-2-3. For those of you who are Mighty Gryphon Seniors, learning to study, if you don’t already know how, is an important asset to your high school and future college education. Everyone cannot just sit in a class, soak up a teacher’s words and leam; therefore, the most sensible thing to do is to take notes in class, complete or at least attempt assignments, ask questions if you have any, and then review for your tests. Learning should be important to eich and every student at Rocky Mount Senior High School because, after all, to leam is the reason schools exist. V “The Ud wants the stitches to spell out ‘peace’ Around the Campus BY DEBBIE HARVEY Welcome to RMSH for another great year. It really seems nice to see so many new faces in the halls. A special welcome is extended to the sophomores and new students. Let’s all lend a hand and help them enjoy Senior High. I hope everyone enjoyed his summer vacation. It surely is extremely un comfortable to sit and study in some of our “hot” classrooms when we remember all the fun we had this summer. This summer, along with having fun, your GRYPHON staff sold ads to finanace this year’s editions of the GRYPHON. The GRYPHON staff also had several “call” meetings, and at one meeting a decision was made to — GIVE COPIES OF THE GRYPHON FREE to the entire student body. It is the desire of the staff that everyone get every edition of the GRYPHON, thus he can keep abreast of all the news at RMSH. Please remember to patronize our advertisers for without them the paper could never have been a reality. The staff sincerely wants everyone to enjoy this first edition of the GRYPHON and all upcoming editions of the GRYPHON. We welcome any new suggestions and con tributions such as news, poetry, and etc. Also, if you ever feel the need to air a complaint - write a “Letter to the Editor.” You Wonder How These Things Begin BY STEVE BRASWELL You wonder how these things being. It begins with a glenn. It begins with a season- Which for want of a better word We might as well call Sep tember. It begins with a forest Where the Woodchucks woo W. and leaves wax green the vines of twilight lovers. Try to see it- Not with your eyes- For they are wise. See it with your ears- The cool green breathing of the leaves. And hear it with the inside of your hand: The soundless sound of Shadows’ flickering light. Celebrate sensation! Recall that secret place. . . You’ve been there-you remember That special place Where once, just once, in your Crowded sunlit lifetime, you hid away In shadows from the tyranny of time. . . Letters to the Editor Editor’s Note: The following letter is by Bill Roebuck, President of the Student Representative Assembly, to the student body of RMSH. Be sure to read the Letter to the Editor on Page 8 also. Put a little YAHOO in your life! That’s right! To vitalize everything that happens at RMSH: That’s my goal. After you elected me President last spring, I spent quite a bit of time thinking about what needed to be done at school. I came to the con clusion that the main thing that needed doing was to give purpose! Why do we need an education? Why do we neied athletics? Why do we need service clubs? Why do we need a dance? Why do we need student government? Each of these activities should have purpose. To give purpose is to vitalize. For a football team, the purpose of taking a beating for four days a week in the hot sun is to win a football game on the fifth day. Much of my time this year will be devoted to our student government or student organization. My goal for student organization is to give it purpose; to vitalize it so that our student organization deals with the problems, desires, and needs of each of you. If you like the mini course system or dislike the dress code, for examples, you can express your opinion through your Student Representative Assembly. “There are three kinds of people in this world, those who make changes happen, those who watch things happen, and those who had no idea what happened.” Each of us can help to give purpose to our student organization and other ac tivities. I ask for your help and cooperation and I, offer to each of you my time and assistance whenever you need it. Sincerely, Bill Roebuck President That special spot beside the clover Where someone’s hand held ynur hand. And love was sweeter than the berries or honey or the stinging taste of mint. It is September before a rainfall. The perfect time to be in love.
