Sensational Gryphs Win Two The Rocky Mount Senior High Gryphons defeated the Durham Senior High Bulldogs 14-6 at Durham. The Gryphons took to the air on their first play from scrimmage for a 31 yard gain and a first down on the Bulldog’s 12 yard line. Carlton Alston went off tackle for two yards, then P.D. Bartley blasted in for the score. Doug Henley’s PAT was good. The score with 8:12 remaining in the first quarter was Rocky Mount 7 Durham 0. The Gryphons found themselves with good field position after a poor 17 yard Bulldog punt in the final moments of the first quarter. The Gryphons moved down to the Durham 6 yard line. Bartley blasted in for an apparent touchdown, but a penalty on the play nullified the score and moved the Gryphons back to the 19. An interception on the next play halted the drive. The Gryphons recovered a Bulldog fumble in the final minutes of the half and took the ball in for the score in nine plays. The PAT made the score 14-0. The defense was able to contain the Bulldogs until the Gryphon offense fumbled the ball at the Gryphon 16. The Bulldogs took the ball in for the score. The PAT was not good. The game ended with the score Rocky 14 Durham 6. CAPS The highly regarded Broughton Caps found the Rocky Mount Senior High Gryphons too tough to handle as the Gryphons pulled off a 20-6 upset victory. After a pair of punt exchanges in the first half, the Gryphon defense met its first challenge. The Caps had a first and ten on their own 37, when their tailback darted down the sideline for 57 yards before being pulled down at the six yard line. The Gryphon defense toughened, and the Caps attempted a field goal that just missed by inches. The Caps were assessed a 25 yard penalty on the field goal attempt giving the Gryphons the ball on their own 35. The Gryphons put together a long drive covering 65 yards in 15 plays. This gave Rocky The Gryphons won their first Division I Eastern 4-A Conference game by defeating the Greenville Rose Ramparts 32-9. The Ramparts controlled the first quarter as the Gryphons were plagued by errors. When the first quarter ended the Ramparts had kicked two field goals for a 6-0 lead. The Ramparts kicked a field goal with 7:14 remaining in the half to give them a 9-0 lead. mfmUSi Mount a 6-0 lead. The PAT was wide. In the second half the Caps received the kickoff and moved down to the Gryphon 39 where their drive stalled. The Gryphons were unable to move the ball and were forced to punt. Burton Robinson got off a high punt that fumbled. Stewert Vaughan and Joe Jones recovered the fumble at the Caps 23 yard line. Carlton Alston carried the ball in for the score. Sid McNeal rolled out 10 pass for me two point conversion but finding his receivers covered, darted in for the score to make it 14-0 Gryphons. The Gryphons scored one more time. Stewert Vaughan blocked a punt that was recovered at the Caps 28 yard line.Alston took the ball in for the touchdown. The PAT was not good due to offensive pass interference. Bartley carried the ball over for the Gryphon’s first score. Doug Henleys PAT cut the lead to 9-7. The Ramparts could not move the ball and were forced to punt. A heavy pass rush by the Gryphons caused the Ramparts to get off a poor 5 yard punt. Senior High took over the Greenville 45 and scored in eight plays behind the passing of Sid McNeal. McNeal first hit Alston for a 26 yard screen pass. McNeal was thrown for losses on the next two plays'. Coach Wiggins then called the tackle eligible play. McNeal dropped back and found Thomas Lancaster alone for a 29 yard scoring strike. Henley’s PAT was blocked. With 31 seconds in the half the Gryphons held a 13-9 lead. Greenville had good field position in the opening minutesof the second half but the Senior High defense toughened and stopped the Ramparts. The game soon turned into a Rocky Mount route. The Ramparts fumbled a Burton Robinson punt and Ronnie Davis recovered for the Gryphons. Bartley took the ball over for the score." The two point conversion was no good. With 52 seconds left in the third quarter Rocky Mount had a 19-9 lead. On the final play of the third quarter Lancaster intercepted a pitch out and Henley’s kick made it 26-9. Larry Kimble crashed into the end zone for Rocky Mount and the last score with 7:35 remaining in the game. P.D. Bartley was the games leading rusher with 91 yards in 25 carries. Carlton Alston carried 13 times for 60 yards and picked up another 31 yards on three pass receptions.
