PAGE EIGHT THE GRYPHON OCTOBER 30, 1973 ^: get involved American Education Week October 21-27, 1973 The theme of National Education is GET INVOLVED. Parents and other citizens throughout the nation should visit schools during American Education Week. Jobs Available in Europe for Graduating Students “Jobs for young people 18 to 29 are now available in Europe anytime of the year,” said Dr. F. X. Gordon, President of Princeton Research. “The European Common Market employment rate is 50 percent less than that of the United States. The job availability for 1974 High School and College graduates in the United States is not so rosy. There are more young people entering the job seeking market than there are suitable jobs”. Many graduating High School Seniors, and college students are wisely following the advice of education experts by planning to take a year off from the academic treadmill to stretch the mind by working and travelling. Jobs Europe is a program designed to give young people, 18 to 29 years of age, an inexpensive and unique opportunity to live in, and learn about, Europe. In the past 13 years jobs have been found in Europe for 10,823 young people. Three thousand jobs are now available anytime of the year - Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall. These guaranteed salaried jobs are mostly for trainees (general help) as stewardesses and stewards on trains, with large 1st class hotels, restaurants, supermarkets, department stores, etc. in Switzerland, England, and Belgium. Most of the jobs include room- and board in addition to local salary. Friends can work together, or near each other, if they apply together. Interested students are asked to send a stamped self- addressed (business size) envelope to: Jobs Europe, 2350 Bean Creek Road, Santa Cruz, California 95060, for free information. The stoi'e is located in A Building between rooms 106 and 110. The committee would greatly appreciate student interest in this worthwhile cause. Some Personals Our personalities are constantly shaped by daily life. It is important then, to keep realigning our priorities. (Questions like the following juay be helpful: . Am I convinced of my personal worth? Do I respect the integrity of others? . Do I beleive there is a special contribution that only I can make toward achieving a better world? . Am I willing to take risks and encounter difficulties in putting my constructive ideas to work? . Am I flexible, keeping in mind that mine may not be the best or the only solution? . Can I endure criticism and refine my own thinking in the light of it? . Do I trust my ability enough to do my best and to keep at it even if someone else gets the credit? Poster Contest Is Big Success Janice Joyner This year the Fire Drill Committee decided to sponsor a poster contest. Homerooms, clubs, classes, or the individual could enter this contest. The contest was held from September 20 through October 1. These posters were supposed to illustrate fire prevention. This contest provided an opportunity for the students to be involved in school activities. The First Period Distributive Education class was awarded first prize for the contest. They received an engraved plaque for their outstanding job on the poster. The Committee extends thanks to all who participated in the contest. The slogan used by the Fire Drill Committee is: During your life, do all you can to prevent fires. Daktar-Diplomat of Bangladesh is the dramatic story of Dr. Viggo B. Olsen’s phenomenal surgical- diplomatic-wartime- adventures - and the bloody birth of Bangladesh. Dr. Viggo Olsen is a diplomat of the American Board of Surgery and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He was born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska and took premedical studies at Tulane University, New Orleans. He was a graduate at the University of Nebraska College of Medicine, and he was the youngest of four in his class to receive the M.D. degree cum laude. Dr. Olsen declined the opportunity to become sixth in the prestigious Halsted lineage of surgeons and a professor at an early age. Instead, he flew to the other side of the world to serve East Pakistanis in pain. With his collegues. Dr. Olsen founded a hospital in the southern section of East Pakistan’s Chittagong District where modern medical care was unknown. He wrote and published the Muslim Bengali to English Dictionary, the first such pocket dictionary ever printed in the nation. “The late afternoon sun acted wisely. It slipped through the low-lying clouds and escaped to a safer land beyond the Bay of Bengal. The time had come to face the harsh realities of night which now enveloped blood- drenched Bangladesh.” “ ‘Daktar Sahib! I have terrible news for you - terrible news! The armed bandits are coming tonight to attack you and the hospital. Daktar Sahib, what will you do?’ ” “How does a man get himself in a fix like this? ....
