JANUARY :{0. 1974 THE GRYPHON PAGES (irace Dortch and Pat Watkins, January’s Rotary Couple, discuss results of the recent elections. (Photo by Killebrew) Two Outgoing Seniors Named Rotary Couple January brings us many things — a new year, lots of snow and cold weather, and another Rotary Couple. The two seniors chosen for this title during January are Pat Watkins and Grace Dortch. PAT WATKINS Pat, the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Watkins, is recognized by many students as the chairman of the Elections Committee. In addition to this, Pat has been on the B honor roll, is a member of the president’s cabinet, and is the president of his homeroom. He is an active member of the United Methodist Youth Fellowship and holds the rank of Eagle Scout. Pat plans to attend North Carolina State University next year to study architecture. When he received the award, Pat said, “It is indeed an honor to receive the award. I am looking forward to at tending the Rotary Club meetings in order to gain a good understanding of the club itself.’’ GRACEDORTCH Anyone who attended the Service Club’s Christmas service certainly recognizes Grace by her beautiful voice. Grace, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James E. Dortch, is not only an active participant of the Service club, but is also a member of the Human Relations Committee at RMSH. As a sophomore, she served as the secretary of her class for the first semester. Grace is treasurer of the Junior Department at her church, vice-president of Y.L.S., and a membet of the Rhoer Club. Grace wants to attend North Carolina Central University next year to major in business administration. The whispiness of cool, soft, petite, white snowflakes in various geometric designs and sizes often fills the minds of many. There are advantages, but also disadvantages of this type of precipitation, especially during a school year. When the snow changes to a blizzard, or becomes sleet and hail, school is likely to be called oh for a few days. But did you ever stop to think that these same blizzards, sleet storms and hail storms are the causes of dangerous roads and highway hazards that lead to possible death? The four seasons were probably created for en joyment and pleasure, but one must also remember to respect the laws of nature - especially during the winter months. ^Discovery^ by Terre Kilpatrick The snow falls lightly And leaves have touched the ground. While birds hop sprightly, Old Man Winter we’ve found. A blanket - the snow Covers every surface. Icy winds may blow And chap each living face. Winter world we see, Lustrous through night and day. Show Spring life to me-- A flower if 1 may. stated, “I was honored as well as surprised to receive this award, and I will represent RMSH to the best of my ability during the month of January.” The word “winter” brings to mind other things besides snow, although “I wish it would snow” is a common thought when one utters the word. Golden silence also covers the countryside as the season approaches in which the noonday sun shines most obliquely. However, in the cities, the larger cities such as New York City, Pittsburgh, Detroit, Chicago, , San P'rancisco, Rocky Mount, etc. the hustle and bustle con tinues despite the cranky weather. The majority of life in the city still survives and feeds on Spaghetti-o’s and Chunky Beef Stew, along with an occasional T. V. Dinner from the favorite neigh borhood grocery market. Back in the countryside. Mom’s homemade foods and preserves eliminate a trip out into the immaculate drift by having been stored away and being ready-to-eat straight from the shelf. Somehow, we survive the Wintertide and continue into the following seasons, only lingering to surpass the up coming annual wintry weather. “Jeremy” Brings Tears & Laughter to Viewers by Kim Nelson It’s been a long time since I’ve enjoyed a movie as much as I did “Jeremy.” The movie, starring Robby Benson and Glynnis O’Connor, is the story of two high school kids in New York City who fall in love. It is a simple and honest story showing the difficulties that often arise in trying to get to know someone. It’s a very funny movie in some places because Jeremy, the shy and somewhat kooky sophomore, has so much trouble trying to “make the first move” toward the beautiful girl who just enrolled in his school. After the ice is finally broken, the two find happiness in being together that neither has experienced before. The bliss lasts about three weeks; then Susan finds out that she must move away from New York because of her father’s business transfer. Jeremy and Susan realize that they will never see each other again, but they both face this heartbreaking reality. Susan leaves, and Jeremy is left Limerieks Your locker can be a convenience. This movie may sound like just another love story, but it is much more than that. The teenagers in the movie portrayed their true characters to some extent, for they started going steady in real life after the filming of the movie began. Robbie and Glynnis arrived at the Cannes Film Festival in France, satisfied with the film, and were thrilled upon seeing it voted No. 1 First Film for its director, Arthur Barron. Both Glynnis and Robby sing a ballad on “Jeremy’s ” soundtrack..The music was as simple and beautiful as the movie itself. One of the reasons that I enjoyed this movie so much is because it’s the kind of movie that everyone can relate to. Almost every teenager can sit through this movie and say to himself, “That looks like something I’d do.” It is an unbelievably great movie that shows how love really is.
