Elections Are A Privilege
For All American Citizens
Class elections were held
at RMSH on Friday, January
fourth and the results have
caused many comments from
students concerning the
candidates, voting, and
results. In a recent poll taken
among students from all three
classes at school, the
following questions were
asked:
1. Are you registered to
vote?
2. Did you vote?
3. Why did you vote (or
why didn’t you vote)?
4. Are you happy with the
results (rf the elections?
5. Why (or why not)?
6. Do you feel that a small
majority of students par
ticipates in class electirais?
7. Do you like the method
(rf self-nomination?
SENIORS INTERVIEWED
CONCERNING
SCHOOL ELECTIONS
In the senior class, David
Nobles responded:
“Yes, I am registered and
I did vote in the elections
because I wanted to become
involved in our student
government. I am not totally
satisfied with the seniw class
officers because some of the
candidates that I supported
were not elected. Of course, I
feel that a small number of
students elects our officers.
Yes, I am satisfied with the
self-nomination.”
Earl Lawrence, a senior,
said, “Yes, I am registered,
but I did not vote because I
didn’t have time.” When
asked if he was satisfied with
the results of the senior class
elections, Earl said that he
was not. He does feel that a
small number of students
participated in the elections.
Earl also said that instead of
self-nomination, the class
officers should nominate
candidates to run fw office.
SENIORS HAVE
A LOT TO
TALK ABOUT
Toni Capps, another
senior, stated, “Yes, I am
registered but I did not vote
because I checked out of
schod Friday. I forgot to vote
in the run-off Tuesday.” In
response to question No. 4, she
said that she was very
satisfied with the results of the
election because the new
(rfficers were the people she
would have supported if she
had voted. She also said that
the new officers were
qualified for their jobs. In
response to question No. 6, she
said that she agreed that a
small number of students
elects the class officers each
year. She likes the method of
self-nomination for she feels
that if people want to do the
job, they will elect them
selves.
JUNIORS INTERVIEWED
ABOUT ELECTIONS
Three junior were in
terviewed, and Steve Perry
said:
“Yes, I am registered,
and I voted Friday in order to
have a voice in student
government.” Steve was
satisfied with the turnout of
the elections for the junior
class, but said, “Some can
didate seem to be elected by
popularity, not necessarily by
qualifications.” He answered
“yes” to questions No. 6 and 7.
Gwen Henderson, when
asked fw her opiniwi, replied,
“Yes, I registered and I voted
to help the candidates that I
wanted to support. Yes, I am
happy with the results
because I feel that our officers
are qualified.” Gwen also
answered “yes” to questions
No. 6 and 7.
The third junior in
terviewed remains
anffliymous, but said that she
is not registered and she did
not vote because she didn’t
have time to do so. She is
satisfied with the results and
thinks that the new officers
are capable of doing a good
job. She also answered “yes”
to questions No. 6 and 7.
SOPHOMORES EXPRESS
OPINIONS ABOUT
ELECTIONS
Robert Privott, a
s(^homore, said that he is
registered and voted Friday.
When asked why he voted,
Robert explained that he ran
Ksthe
real thing.
Cq^
for (and won) the office of
vice-president last year and
many of his classmates
supported him, so he voted
this year to support the
candidates of his choice. He
was happy with the newly-
elected sophomOTe (rfficers
and when asked question No.
6, he said that he did not
believe that only a few
students were active in the
electiois. He agrees with the
method of self-nomination
because he believes that if a
person is nominated to run for
an office, he usually does so
whether or not he really wants
to serve.
One anonymous
sophomore said that she is
registered and did vote in
order to have a voice in the
government and to elect the
candidates that she wanted.
She was satisfied with the
results because most of the
students that she supported
were elected to office. She
feels, however, that not
enou^ students participate in
elections and many sdidents
register but do not vote.
SOPHOMORES STILL
TALKING ABOUT
ELECTIONS
Corbi Bulluck, also a
sophomore, said that she is
registered and voted on
Friday in order to take part in
the student government and to
help elect the candidates she
supported. She was satisfied
with the election returns, for
she feels that the new officers
are capable of doing a good
job. She stated that she
thought her class had a fairly
good percentage of voters,
and agrees with the method of
self-nomination because she
thinks that students who
nominate themselves must be
willing to work.
GETINVOLVED
OR
DO NOT COMPLAIN
It is obvious that not all
students voted in the elec-
tiMis, and some of these
students are not satisfied with
the results. Everyone at
RMSH has the right to vote in
our school electiais, and, in
some cases, one vote DOES
make'a difference. To have a
voice in our student govern
ment, get out and vote!
Exercize Mie of your most
precious rights - the right to
vote.
It is more difficult to conceal
ignorance than it is to acquire
knowledge. And think of the
benefits.
“You cannot refer to the
Rumble of 1776 and Honest
Abe's pad and still expect to
pass American History,
John.”
Two RMSH Clubs
Show School Spirit
The Good Sports and the
Phalanx clubs are really busy
this mraith spreading their
school spirit all across Rocky
Mount Senior High.
The Good Sports Club is
busy selling ribbons. Ribbons
will be sold throughout the
basketball season. The club
urges students to buy ribbons,
because the money earned
will be used f(»* the annual
athletic picnic. A wise saying
of the Good Sports Club is
“More ribbons sold means a
better picnic.”
The Phalanx Club is
flooded in stationery.
Beautiful floral stationery is
being sold by Phalanx
members at the reasonable
price of $1.25. The money
earned from this project goes
into the treasury to be used at
later dates. They urge RMSH
students to buy statiwiery, as
it will help support the club in
other projects. The Phalanx
Club plans to get the Heart
Fund underway the early part
of February, even now they
stress that all students con
tribute to this fund as the
money may save many lives
this year.
