PAGE 10 THE GRYPHON FEBRUARY 27, 1974 Gryphs Win Division Crown RM vs. Bertie RMSH came from 10 points down early in the fourth quarter to take a thrilling double overtime victory over Bertie Central. The double overtime score was 65-64. The win pushed the Gryphon’s record to 11-5. The Gryphons rallied to tie the game at 55-all at the final buzzer. Both teams scored 6 points in the first overtime. RMSH scored four points to take the victory in the final overtime. RMSH was paced by Phil Ford with 27. Jeff Collins added 12. Ben Pullman scored 18 for Bertie. RM vs Fike RMSH Gryphons suffered their first conference loss to Wilson 83-52 when they traveled to Wilson. The loss dropped the Gryphs record to 5-1 in the conference and 13-6 overall. The Titans record is 9- 7. The Gryphons only led twice the entire game. Fike dominated the game leading 37-25 at half time and poured it on in the second half. Phil Ford led the Gryphs losing cause with 35. Thomas Blue had 28 points for the Titans. William Plyler added 15. RM vs Greenville Rose RMSH defeated Green ville Rose 62-56 when they traveled to Greenville. Jarvis Moore and Phil Ford led the victorious Gryphs with 22 and 21 points. Herb Bynum had 22 for the Rampants. The win pushed RMSH record to 6-1 in the conference and 14-6 overall. The Gryphons jumped off to a 23-12 first quarter lead and led 35-24 at intermission. The Rampants outscored the Gryphs 32 - 27 in the second half but it wasn’t enough. RM vs Northeastern RMSH by winning a 84-82 overtime contest over Nor theastern assured them of a first round bye in the Con ference tournament. For the Gryphs it was an uphill battle all the way. RM record is 15-6 while Northeastern dropped to 14-5. Phil Ford poured in a season high of 52. Joe Jones added 16 points. Martin Towe led the Eagles with 30. 16 RM vs Bertie RMSH clinched the division I crown with a 57-55 overtime victory. The victory pushed the Gryphons record to 16-6 overall and 8-1 in the conference. Bertie has the record of 12-8 and 7-2 in the conference. Rocky Mount was down 33-31 at intermission but battled back in the second half. Phil Ford led the Gryphs with 31 points. Alfonzo Ruffin scored 18 points for the Falcons. RM vs Northern Nash The Rocky Mount Gryphons ended the regular season on a winning note with a 86-70 thrashing of rival Northern Nash. The win made RMSH record 17-6 overall and 9-1 in the conference action. Northern’s Nash record is 2- 19 at the regular season end. The Gryphs had a 42-33 half time lead and out ran the Knights to victory. Phil Ford poured in 43 points and Thomas Lancaster had 18. Vernon Cheeks had 18 for the Knights. Wrestlers Do Well In District The Grapplers From RMSH have proven them selves in compiling the Grapplers 7-6-1 record this season, competed in the Eastern 4A Division I -Wrestling Tournament. Donald Farmer and Petf Tapia earned the title ot Champion in their weight classes. Many other RMSH Grapplers placed in the Competition.
