MARCH 27,1974 THE GRYPHON PAGE 3 Rocky Mount is Planning Its First Olympic Development Bicycle Race The Rocky Mount Olympic Development Bicycle Race, the first race of its kind in this area, will be held Saturday, March 30 and Sunday, March 31 with events on the Wesleyan College campus and through rolling countryside. The race was originated by members of the NC Wesleyan Bicycle Club and will be co-sponsored by Hardee’s Food Systems, Inc. and Raleigh Industries of America, Inc. in addition to several local merchants. Stage one, a 77-mile road stage, will begin Saturday afternoon at 1:00. Riders will assemble at Northern Nash High School and race around a seven-mile course. Stage two will be held Sunday morning at 8:00, and is a ten- mile time trial in which racers compete against the clock. Stage three, a fifty-mile Criterium Stage, will begin at 1:00 Sunday afternoon. The race will be held on a one-mile flat course on the Wesleyan College campus. The entry fee for each rider will be $4.00, including two days of racing. The deadline for entries is March 28. For safety purposes, only 150 riders will be permitted to race in the Criterium Stage. All racers must have a 1974 ABL license. Registration will be held at Northern Nash High School at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, at which time all riders will receive numbers. This event will prove to be an exciting spectator sport; one which will not generally be offered to the public free of charge. In stage one, the riders will race around an hourglass-shaped track. The riders will be fairly evenly spaced, traveling about 10 m.p.h., and will be in view at nearly all times. A citizens band radio will be stationed around the track to keep spectators fully informed. Another good spectator event will be the 50-mile road stage on Sunday, because the course is only one mile, and viewers will be able to see the close-up action. The top cyclists of the country will be matching their wits and stamina in this contest. One of the main at tractions will be John Howard, the national champion from Texas, who won the Panamerican Race last year and placed third in the bicycle tour of Ireland. Another big name is John Allis, a cyclist who has represented the U.S. three times in the Olympics. Others are expected from California and possibly Portugal and England. The races will be exciting, for a rider’s ability differs as the courses change from hilly to flat; from long to short. The riders generally travel in a “pack”, or a large group for the purpose of keeping the wind from decreasing their speed. Several riders frequently break away from the pack and go out ahead of the others, breaking the wind for each other, while others may drop out of the pack from fatigue or lack of speed. The most exciting moment occurs when the leading racers sprint for the finish. In these bicycle races, anyone can win. Trophies and merchandise will be awarded to winners and runners-up. John Allis and John Howard will hold a seminar Saturday morning at 8:30 in the N.C. Wesleyan College cafeteria for interested persons to discuss racing tactics, training, and the 1973 tour of Ireland. Like the races, this seminar is free of charge, and open to anyone who is interested. The only way to bring back events such as this Olympic Bicycle Race to Rocky Mount is to support them. The races don’t cost the spectators a penny, so come out and be a part of the fun. Pictured above winner of Prepared Speech Contest Marsha Edge. Worried About the Fntnre?
