CHURCH MONDAY llini SATURDAY 8:30 - 5:30 In an attempt to find out what RMSH athletes are really like, the Sports Department issued a sports information questionnaire to athletes representing each sport. The answers we received were somewhat su^rising at times, but one thing was evident: all athletes here take their sport seriously. Our s[»rts heroes are really dedicated and earnest about their par ticipation in sports. What follows are some of the more frequent responses. 1. Why do you participate in athletics? Answers: It’s fun, interesting, gives you a chance to get rid of all your frustrations, get to know people around the state and gives me a sense of school pride. For the fun of it. I enjoy the competition and I also want to do it in college. They keep alot of boys out of trouble. I participate for all the people who would love to play but are unable. I like to get out of school early. Some people are able to express themselves through words. I find that physical exertion is my most complete way of expressing myself. To prove to myself that I can do it. It’s a beautiful feeling with people behind you. 2. Are you in favor of a ■ girl’s athletic program? Answers: Yes: 20 No: 5 Yes, because it’s time consuming and mind con suming. It’s also body building. Yes, we are not different except in sex and body features. No. Women are to be left in the kitchen, not in a locker room or gridiron. Sure, just as long as they keep it just to the girls and not mix it with the boys. No. I feel that a woman athlete is too masculine to be called a woman. Basketball is a man’s sport. 3. Do you like your uniform? Answers: yes: 19 ho: 5 Yes, I think it’s sexy. We never got our uniforms but I don’t care because they were ugly as sin. Yes, because the colors are bright. We should be allowed to wear colored shoes. No. It’s too revealing. It serves the purpose. Sometimes I thought I was going to lose my pants. The uniform doesn’t make the player. 4. Do you feel the student body supports your sport enthusiastically? Answers: yes: 11 No: 17 No, track is a sport hidden in the background of other sports. Heck no. Yes, as long as we are winning. It seems the students support basketball more than they do football or baseball. Students don’t give us a chance. 5. Do you feel your sport is given adequate press coverage? Answers: yes: 10 no: 16 No, and we won the State Championship! Many good players were overlooked for the more well- knowns. THE TELEGRAM never knew we existed. Press coverage con centrates on one person but we are the Gryphons. No, but I guess it’s because we lost most of the time! 6. Do you have trouble keeping your grades up during the off-season? Answers: no: 23 yes: 4 No, but sometimes on days of games when we had a test, I wouldn’t do good on the test because I would be nervous. It wouldn’t hurt if some teachers would try to un derstand why you didn’t do your homework on the night of an away game. I had to work harder in order to be eligible to play. I have trouble keeping my grades up all year long. £sA aSHSDWM nSTtO fQf, rmPiKe sirnr MAU UHNMX - MMU PARTt > MIMt n.UW ROCKY MOUNT AUTO PARTS 1800A SUNSET AVENUE ROCKY MOUNT, NORTH CAROLINA 27801 WIILIAM A. Answers: Yes: 13 no: 13 The Green Bombs get us there, but that’s about all. The Trailways buses have reclining seats but most of them are broke. The new buses have leg space but no reclining seats. But none of them have restrooms. It would be more fun if the cheerleaders could ride with us. The drivers are reckless. When we finally got a Trailways bus, it broke down. 8. What do you think of your coach? Miss Bradshaw really knows her stuff. Coach Hicks is the greatest coach I could ask for. He’s a fine man to be associated with. He was funny but still serious about getting the job done. Coach Wiggins is a molder of gentlemen. Coach Carter is a good strategist and a good teacher of fun^mentals. Even though he chews tobacco, I like him. Coach Davis is one of the nicest men you’ll ever meet. He’s crazy. 9. Have you ever been injured while playing? Answers: Yes: 11 no: 14 Once I got a concussion when hit by a pitched ball when batting. Just blisters, sprains and bruises. No, but I bet it’s exciting! Yes, I was stepped on by some fat girl. I fell down and skinned my knee. 10. Who, on ^our team, do you think is the most out standing player in terms of morale, ability, sport smanship and contribution?
