The Hornets out-gained the Gymnasts Practice Hard Here at Rocky Mount Senior High, a group of girls sometimes goes unrecognized. They devote much of their time and energy in and outside of school to our Gymnastics Team. Mrs. Betty Pryor is the girls’ head coach, and Vickie Taylor is captain of the team. Other members are: Julie Smith, co captain, Ann Ramsey, secFetary, Phyllis Keys, Deborah Ramsey and Valerie Bieber. Gymnastics is an art, not just some hobby that these, girls engage in. It is a sport just as football or basketball. In football it is very necessary to be in top fit shape. Well, the same applies to Gymnastics. It is nowhere as simple as doing a somersault on a mattress, even though when thp “experts” do it, it may look that way. During the school year be on the lookout for these fine gym stars. They perform at half- time during some of the basketball games, and second semester they will present their talents in their own assembly. Gryphons 313 to 279. Doug Henley passed for 102 yards. The Hornets were relentless in their assault on the Gryphon defense. Coach Wiggins stated that the Gryphs didn’t get the opportunities to score. “Hillside has the best football team we have faced this season,” Wiggins said. Greg Gunter and Marvin Dancy were standouts for the Gryphs in the game. RM vs Rose The Rampants came to Rocky Mount and spoiled Homecoming by defeating RMSH 14-0. Coach Wiggins said that the Gryphs didn’t capitalize on Rose’s mistakes. ‘The defense played great,” said Wiggins. “The offense could not move the ball. ” The Gryphons of the week were Richard Lea and Preston Jones. This knight made his home out in the country. One day this knight met a titan, and as soon as he saw this titan a brainstorm rained upon his head. “I’m tired of hunting for game,” he told the titan. “Why don’t you and I make the others bring it to us?” “How will we do that?” asked the titan. “We’ll tell everyone that we will have a football game and we will be playing for the conference crown,” said the knight. “Now everyone will want to see us play and they will have to bring a killed animal for our dinner in order to get in. Thus we will have our dinner and won’t have to get it our selves.” The titan, however, was quite a Doubting Titan. “People won’t pay good food to come and watch us play,” he said. “Come now,” said the knight. “All you have to do is go around and tell everyone that you will win because I am just a wor thless patootie. And I’ll tell everyone that I will win because you’re a worthless patootie, and everyone will get excited and come to see the fight.” So the knight hired a good P.R. man and told all the newspapers that he would win, and the titan did the same. The day of the fight arrived, and the knight and the titan were hungry for they had not gone hunting and therefore had no food. They licked their chops at the thought of all the food they would soon have to eat. But alas, no one showed up for the game for everyone figured that a game between two worthless patooties would be dull. “It’s all your fault,” said the knight. “No, it was your idea,” said the titan. The two got into a vicious fight, and were so busy clawing at each other that they did not notice that some gryphons were slowly creeping up behind them. The gryphons easily defeated the knight and the titan, and walked away smiling, for they carried the conference championship trophy upon their shoulders. Moral: Gryphons are what it is.
