(Photo by Bryant) Parking Lot Attendant Becomes Helpful Hero Social Bits By Phyllis Goffney “Faster than a speeding bullet; more powerful than a locamotive. . . it’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s superman.” Nope it’s Mr. Powell! Unknown to many, Mr. Robert Henry Powell, RMSH’s mild-mannered parking lot attendant, is really a very super hero! Of course, students only see him directing cars in and out of the parking lot or checking an occasional, lunch permit! But who knows what evil lerks in the parking lot while students are in class? It mnjr npp^ar that Mr. Powell is seldom very busy; yet there are many times when he must transform into the man students seldom see! Many RMSH students leave their cars unlocked and headlights on, unaware that Mr. Powell is protecting the cars as if they were his own. At the first sign of trouble, he jimps into the back of his super black-mobile and becomes Super Powell! Often he has chased many would-be thieves from the parking lot. And his stem voice and firm hand have kept possible tire-slicers from vandalising the parking lot. Now that the identity of Mr. Powell is known, many wiU doubt the facts. How can an 80 year old man, retired for 13 years, who is often seen hugging RMSH girls, possibly work five hours a day guarding and protecting the cars without collapsing? Well, there are those students who help him by locking their cars and making sure no valuables are left to tempt anyone. They know that no super hero can battle crime by himself! So far there has been no trouble this year and Mr. Powell doesn’t expect a lot. “If everyone will lock their cars and realize you can’t trust nobody, I won’t have to work so hard,” is Mr. Powell’s solution. Of course no one wants to put Su])er Powell out of a job. He does such an excellent job and gets along well with the students. Mr. Powell was assured, though, that even if students todc a more respon sible attitude resulting in the loss of his job, there would definitely be a place for him on the Saturday morning line-up . . . along with the other super heros! Hie Skill Developmental Reading Class can improve any student’s reading and thus his performance In other subjects. Develt^mental Reading might be called Speeding Reading. This course is exactly what it says it is — reading. Students often practice with films and books of their choice. In fact, many of the methods are self-teaching, but Miss Genia Carpenter does guide too. Hie books, films, and machines help the students with vocabulary, comprehension, and reading rate or speed. If reading can do all this then all subjects could get easier. AMs dMdMcrti Lawn Mowfers ai^ Triictors P*Uiv«l Bqu^peeiit Ceb 4M-WH Jay-Mar Cancellation Shoes 154 S. Main Rocky Mount, N. C.
