Page Eight — THE GRYPHON Where Are The Fads Of The 60’s? The fun fads of the 60’s are gone. But there must be rem nants of them somewhere. Think back, not to the yesteryears of goldfish swallowing and stuffing telephone booths, but to the ones recognizable to students of RMSH. Streaking, which had an unusually fast start last spring. has slowed down to a trot. Evidently, streakers found they could get their jollies doing something else. Also, this nippy weather is not conducive to streaking. Several weeks back, Shoneys was struck by two senior high streakers. Needless to say, three regular patrons threw up . . . Really! Fact was that a couple of years ago a soul could not be found without a Yo-Yo. They were neato, if you know what I mean. A friend unable to do a behind-the-back sleeper betwixt the knees was a source of shame. Vereen Mizelle was actually noted for his various Yo-Yo antics. It was rumored that he even snipped a quarter off the ear of the Zip Mart’s Yo- Yo champ. What happened to all the old hula hoops? Those gyrating loops of perpetual pleasure have completely disappeared. Many met their fate last year and were used to syphon gas during the shortage. There seems to be one fad that is one the sure rebound. That is the skateboard. Skateboarding has gained much popularity since summer. There have even been a few bold hearted board-jocks such as Mike Wooten and Frank Inscoe seen flashing down the 200 hall of RMSH. These fads are gone. It’s okay to remember them but that leaves one question in mind; what’s next? SOCIAL COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN PHYLLIS GOFFNEY, and Committee members: Gail Pliillips, TereM Mosley, Ginl Jefferson, ^ and Biff White celebrate the success of the Gryphon Breakfast, \ | r S l IflHS given October 11. Spanish Tour Plans are being made for a travel-study tour of Salamanca, Spain under the direction of the American Institute for Foreign Study for the month of July. Counselors for the trip will 1^ Miss Linda Hargrove of Rocky Mount Senior High and Miss Stephanie Pigford of R. M. Wilson. The trip will begin from New York City on July third and will include a weeks visit to Paris and Rome. The highlights of the trip will be a three week stay in Salamanca, Spain. While there, the students will stay at the University of Salamanca and will be taught conversational Spanish by native Spaniards. An excursion to Madrid, the capital of Spain, is also planned. The travel-study tour is open to any interested student. It is not necessary for the student to be enrolled in a Spanish class. Any interested persons may contact Miss Hargrove in Room 120. SRA Committees Host Gryphon Breakfast One of the highlights of homecoming for the student body of Rocky Mount Senior High is the Gryphon Breakfast sponsored by ^ Social and ^hool Spirit Committees. The main purpose of the Gryphon Breakfast is to promote school spirit, to feel the unity within the students, cheerleaders, and football teams and to give en couragement and security to the team. The Breakfast snack consists of doughnuts, Gryp-Aid and milk. The cost of the snack was 2S for students. The football team and cheerleaders were guests of the Social Committee and School Spirit Conunittee, and their sna^ was free. The School S[mt Committee wrapped the poles which are locat^ between the one hun dred and two hundred hall and are part of the outside walkway. A colorful centerpiece of fall flowers highlighted by a miniature football was used on the table. Adding cdor to the Breakfa$t was the TAC Club who came to Breakfast in their red and white uniforms. The Publicity Committee sent out invitations to all of the members of the football team and cheerleaders. The cohairman of the Social Committee, Boone McGee stated that “For the people that did come, they enjoyed it and had a nice time. We expected more people but it was suc cessful.” It is only through the efforts of the Social Committee, headed by Phyllis Goffney and Boon McGee, the Publicity Com mittee, headed by Laura Davenport, and the School Spirit Committee, headed by Sally Davis that this Gryphon Bre^ast was successful and given to the students of Rocky Mount Senior High. Hi-Noc-Ar Staff Begins Sales Many years ago a tribe of Indians settled in the halls of RMSH. They began writing leaflets describing their native folklore and passing them out to students. Writing this leaflet became such an important part of their lives that they decided to give it a special name, the Hi- Noc-Ar. The descendants of the original tribe have continued the practice of writing the Hi- Noc-Ar, and under tlie able guidance or co-chiefs John Thorp (no relation to Jim) and Jan Lassiter, and head squaw Miss Alma Murchison, 35 little Indians were prepared to take subscriptions for their 1975 edition. The Hi-Noc-Ar tribe has been busy all summer selling ads so that the cost of the book would stay the same. From October 21-25 they collected wampum from the students. Only $7.50 per book, $4.00 was required down payment for those Indians a little short of funds. 4e4e4e:|c4c4u|(3|i3tc4c:|c4c4c |2\linaiid*s| * DecouNTDrtjcss ■; w * ^mowntownl I WestEnd^ { Plaza % * Rocky Mount * { Ookwood , { ^ Shopping C«nt*r t L-O-W^E-S-T * {Discount PricesS T /.
