For the first time in a couple of years the junior varsity has ac complished something — a winning season. With their present 5-1-1 record the JV members should receive everyone’s congratulations and support. When asked why the team is doing so well this year, Coach Chesson answered that the team has more members. Therefore, he can play more people so that the players do not get very tired. In previous years, Coach Chesson has had to play some on both offense and defense during the same game. The RMSH Jayvees have had a good season thus far. The Baby Gryphs have lost to Greenville Rose. The Jayvees have a 5-1-1 record this season. RM JV vs Broughton JV The RMSH Jayvees ripped Broughton 21-0 to push their record to 3-0. The Baby Gryphs gained 282 yards to 98 for Broughton. Lindon Willis passed for one TD and ran for another. The defense sacked the quarterback six times. RM JV vs. Durham JV The Baby Gryphs shut out the Bull pups 22-0. The Jayvees amassed 336 total yards. The Durham JV’s had 127 yards total offense. Terry Brown rushed for 103 yards. Lindon Willis passed for two TD’s. RM JV vs. Hillside JV The RMSH Jayvees won a close one to make their record 5- 0. The Baby Gryphs defeated Hillside JV’s 8-6. The Baby Hornets out-gained the Gryph Jayvees 193 to 167. Terry Brown scored the only Gryphon TD. RM JV vs. Rose JV The Baby Gryphs suffered their first loss of the season. The Baby Rampants defeated the Baby Gryphs 6-0. Everything Coach Chesson stated that the spirit of his team is “pretty good, especially when they are winning.” According to Coach Chesson, the junior varsity football team has several outstanding players. Dennis Court is a good blocking fullback and linebacker. Lindon Willis is good at throwing and running. Mike Upchurch is successful as linebacker. Mike Battle and Darrell Jordon are quick and strong tackles. Anthony Titus and James Bynum are good defensive ends. However, the defensive backfield is too weak and not aggressive enough. This year’s team is a good group of players. If they stay went wrong for the Jayvees. The Baby Gryphs had a number of scoring chances but they could not cash in. RM JV vs Northeastern JV The Baby Gryphs tied Nor theastern JV’s 6-6 to make their record 5-1-1. Both teams looked sluggish on offense. They could not move the ball. It was 6-0 after one half. Lindon Willis passed to James Bynum for the only Gryphon TD. together, the team will continue to have a successful season. If the players gain more weight by next year, RMSH varsity and junior varsity teams will be much better. Coach Chesson said that the teams from Wilson Fike and Northern Nash are the most difficult opponents that the RMSH junior varsity team will face. Hopefully, the Gryphons will defeat these teams when they meet on October 31 and November 7. The junior varsity team is made up of both sophomores and juniors. They are not, as many people choose to assume, leftovers from the varsity squad. Many juniors who could possibly make the varsity and “sit the bench,” prefer to be on the field playing junior varsity football to gain experience. To these players, learning through experience is more important than riding with the varsity team. It is this attitude that can make for a winning season. With their attitude and talent, the junior varsity players have overcome the stereotyped impression that they are branded with. The 1974 junior varsity members are winners on the field and off. The season is not yet over; it is not too late to support the junior varsity football team. November is set apart by the booming of many guns. This is the time to put away most of the finishing tackle, to go over the big-game guns, to dress and waterpoof the footwear, and to get out the heavy clothing. It’s the time for vigorous days outdoors and friendly quiet evenings inside. For all-day hunting trips when the weather is damp, water-proof matches are a blessing to have. Matches can be effectively waterproofed by dipping them about halfway into thin shellac or varnish. This not only protects them from the November moisture, but adds to their burning quality, since these solutions are flammable. Rabbit season makes its appearance the 23 of November. The daily bag limit is five, possession, of 10, and 75 for the season. (Who keeps up with a season amount?) When using split shot for sinkers on a fishing line, often times you’ll find that they slip. Split shot won’t slip if you insert a small piece of rubber balloon in the slit before you pinch the shot onto the line. Trim off the excess rubber and. everything’s set. Perplexed as to what to do with an old pair of camouflage pants, RMSH’s own Bill Wilson came up with this idea. The pants were altered into a bow- cover for his hunting bow. The same thing could be done for your gun. The idea is that the cover keeps the sun from throwing a glare off the barrel and scaring off the game. The price of hunting boots has led to buying only one pair of boots for multi-season use. This has presented the problem of how big to buy them. Should you allow for the extra socks of winter, or buy to fit the light weight socks of summer? A solution to this problem is to buy for the winter socks and during warm weather, wear innersoles in the boots. These innersoles are inexpensive, they maintain a proper fit, cushion your walk, and absorb perspiration. November 23 marks the beginning of quail season. Daily limit; 10; possession: 20; and season: 100. Be sure to buy plenty of shells for the season from any of our local athletic stores or sports departments. MAKE A Pin STOP HOT DOGS-HAMBURGERS-F.
