THE GRYPHON - Page Ten ACC Ready For Season SPORTSLIGHTS BATTLE GETS GOOD YARDAGE — Tailback WUIiam Battle turns It on as Northern Nash defenders close in. (Photo by Killebrew) — he remained vertical though immersed for 18 hours. Now they call him Wrinkles. This is a nifty book to dip in and out of. (Have you ever tried to dip out of something? That’s about as ridiculous as saying that someone shaved his mustache off. Have you ever heard of someone shaving his mustache on?) Anyway, back to records. Bill Sharman made 59 consecutive free throws in the 1959 NBA playoffs. (Shouldn’t the guys who fouled him get credited for assists?) In bowling, Frank Caruna and Max Stein made 29 consecutive strikes, thereby becoming candidates for the George Meany Award. (These are the jokes, folks.) The tallest woman basketball player is Ulyana Semyononova, who is six feet nine-and a half.” Imagine her in wedgies? The longest boxing match was between Andy Bowen and Jack Burke in New Orleans, April 6-7, 1893. The fight lasted 110 rounds, from 9:15 p.m. until 4:34 the next morning. It was declared no contest when both of the fighters were unable to con tinue. By Sara Jane Collier Just for the record, here’s a book that will win you a lot of bets: The Guinness Book of World Records, just out in a new edition. Item: The fastest hockey scoring on record was an assault by Toronto in 1938 — eight goals in four minutes, 52 seconds against the New York Americans. Thai’s probably one reason you don’t hear much about the New York Americans any more. And I suspect that the goalie changed his name. The book is, as usual, compiled by Norris and Ross McWhirter, the twins with the world’s greatest record collection. Who else would know that Allen Astles is the world’s marathon tiddleywinks champion? “He potted 10,(KX) winks in just under four hours,” and potted sounds like the right word for Allen. Then there is Mark Lowder ot Albemarle, who only last July set the mark for treading water RM Ends Year The RMSH Gryphons had a 5- 5 record when the season came to a close. Their 2-2 conference mark enabled them to tie Wilson for second place in the conference. “I was not disatisfied and key injuries hurt us some, but overall we had good team effort.” RM vs Northern Nash “We had a great team effort offensively and defensively,” said Coach Wiggins after RMSH crushed arch rival Northern Nash 21-7. William Battle scored 2 RMSH TD’s on runs of 20 and 3 yards. The other score came on a 14 yard run by Willie Williams after a punt was blocked. James Freer scored the only Knight TD. Gryphs of week were Kevin Battle and Willie Williams. RM vs Wilson Fike Rocky Mount invaded Titan Territory in hopes of spoiling Wilson’s Homecoming, but the Titans defeated the Gryphs 35- 20. RM scored on a 16 yard pass from Sid McNeal to Preston Jones. William Battle scored on a one yard run. Marvin Dancy collected a Wilson fumble and went 67 yards for the last Gryph TD. “Wilson was the finest team we faced all year,” said Coach Wiggins. Ronald Kearny and Earl Lawrence were Gryphs of the week. AREA 919 442 0154 Densons, Inc. MEN'S SHOP Rocky Mount, North Carolina 27801 Basketball season is about to start and in the ACC the play should be as exciting as last year. NC. Slate will be the team to beat this season as they were last season. The main challengers of NSCU will be UNC, Maryland and a sur prising Clemson. It promises to be another great year for all ACC teams. N.C. State with David Thompson will be strong again. Thompson was the ACC’s leading scorer last year. Five feet-six inch Monte Towe and 6’ 1” Mo Rivers will be back at guards. Phil Spence will take the place of the departing senior Tom Burleson. Tim Stoddard will be the other starting for ward, but will be pushed by incoming freshman 6’ 7” Kenny Carr. The loss of Bobby Jones and Darrell due to graduation and Ray Harrison becuase of illness will hurt the Tar Heels. Six foot, two inch Phil Ford will fill one guard spot. Six feet, two inch John Kuester will be opposite Ford probably. The front line will be tall, with Mitch Kup- chak, six feet nine inches, Ed Stahl, six feet ten inches, and Walter Davis, six feet five in ches. Maryland had a great year recruiting even if they didn’t get Moses Malone. Back court ace John Lucas, 6’ 4” will be back this year for the Terrapins. Mo Howard will help Lucas in the back court. Six feet, nine inch Tom Roy will be at center. At forwards will be big Owen Brown and Steve Sheppard. Six foot, six inch Sheppard sat out last year because of grades. Clemson is the only team with a bonafide center, and it could make a difference. Seven foot- one inch Wayne Rollins will be the pivot man. Seniors Wayne Croft, 6’ 9”, and Van Gregg, 6’ 2” will probably be starting forwards. Bruce Harmon will be at guard and either 6’ 4” Skip Wise or 6’ 5” Stan Rome both freshmen. The Tigers had an excellent year recruiting. Wake Forest will have the same problem they have had for years. The Deacons don’t have a big man. The center position will be taken over by Don Mullinix, 6’ 9”, and Daryl Peterson, a college transfer. Cal Stamp along with 6’ 7” Charlie Floyd of 6’ 6” Mike Parrish. Six footer Skip Brown will be one guard along with Jerry Schellenburg, and Phil Perry. Duke has a new head coach, Bill Foster. Six feet, eight inch Bob Fleischer will be moved to forward. He will team up with either 6’ 5” George Moses, 6’ 4” Pete Kramer or 6’ 2” Kevin Billerman and Tates Arm strong. Virginia’s new coach Terry Holland will be in for a long season. One reason is Gus (Jerard went pro. The center position is hurting with Ray Morningstar and Marc lavaroni. Wally Walker 6’ 7” will be one forward and 6’ 7” Dan Bonner or 6’ 7” Lamont Carr, a Junior College transfer. Billy Langloh and either Brian Tully, Dave Koester or Tom Brisco will be guards. Gryphs Named Rocky Mount football team had two players named to the All Conference team. The Gryphs placed defensive tackle Jarvis Moore and punter Doug Henley. Moore has played great on defense for the entire season. He made some key plays to help the Gryphs win. Punter and kicker Doug Henley has done a good job this year. He has kept other teams backed up with super punts. Henley has also played at quarterback and wide receiver. ‘TTSASONE” m IN A CLASS BY ITSELF SEE THEM AT: JC3YNER 8 T.V. & APPLIANCE EngUwood Squore Shopping Center WeVecoHed "Peoples Bonk for good reason. unnulfliinlllilllj When Peoples Bank started out in 1931, we had one primary objective... to serve the financial needs cf people.
