R.M vs Tarboro
The 1974-75 edition of the
RMSH basketball team look to
the hard wood against Tarboro
in the first game of the season.
The result an 83-67 victory for
the Gryphons. Tarboro had a
height advantage, but it didn’t
matter. The Vikings weren’t
going to give up without a fight.
The Gryphs lead was 39-31 at
intermission, but Tarboro cut

Tread, tread, spin, spin, spin,
stand up legs back, stand up
legs back. If you don’t know
whal this means, just ask a
wrestler. He could tell you.
These instructions can be heard
during wrestling season as the
RMSH wrestlers get ready for
upcoming matches. The RMSH
wrestling program has made
great strides from when the
sport was started about four
years ago.
There have been some fine
teams in the past. This team
should be no exception. Coach
Sian Bastian has worked his
players hard in practice so the
team will be ready for the
season. There are six grapplers
returning from last year’s team
Mike Avent, McCarge Clark,
Greg Dawes, Billy Odom, Mack
Wiggins, and Bill Wilson. With
these men back the Gryphons
are in easy grasp of the con
ference title.
It takes much hard work to be
a wrestler. The first thing is
that a wrestler has to be in
shape. A wrestler might have to
go the full time of a match, and
that takes a lot of stamina.
Another fact that is important
to a grappler is his weight. If a
wrestler is over weight he has to
get his weight down any way
possible. If he doens’t weigh
enough he starts eating
everything in sight.
One of the most distressing
things to a wrestler is when he
puls on a great performance
and there are.only a handful of
the lead to 53-51 after 3 periods.
RMSH had four men in double
figures — Gerry Felton with 28,
Jarvis Moore had 21, Charles
Lewis had 10 and Ken Bulluck
with 10. Duane Hessey had 24
points for the losers.
RM vs Goldsboro
All-American Ben Uzzell
scored 34 points for Goldsboro,
but it wasn’t enough as the
RMSH Gryphons pulled out a 58-
55 victory. The upset victory
was the second for the Gryphs
against no losses. It was a tough
game from start to finish as the
score shows. The Gryphs led 25-
22 at half. Rocky Mount placed 2
men in double figures —
Charles Lewis with 28 and
Gerry Felton had 13.
RM vs Tarboro
Don Johnson sank 2 free
throws with 3 seconds to go in
the second overtime to give
RMSH a 76-74 win. Down 14
points in the 4th quarter the
Gryphons fought back to tie the
game at 64-64. Ken Bulluck and
Johnson came on in the fourth
period and sparked the Gryphs
to victory. Tarboro led 30-21 at
halftime. Ken Bulluck led the
Gryphs with 17 points followed
by Wayne Alston with 13. A1
Forrest had 18 for Taboro.

people there to see it. That’s
DISTRESSING. The student
body at RMSH doesn’t give
their support to the wrestling
team as it does to the football
and basketball teams. It is high
lime the wrestling team should
gel the support it deserves from
the students.

Gryph Origin Explained
In the fall of 1969, there were
no longer Blackbirds at Senior
High nor Lions at Booker T.
Washington, as a new Rocky
Mount Senior High was formed.
As a result of the merger of
these two schools, the Gryphon
became the Blackbird and the
Lion of the new Senior High.
In order to derive at this new
mascot and new school colors of
Teen Employment
(Continued from page one)
It is surprising, but even the
new businesses are cutting back
employees. Vicki Tanner, who
worked for Tastee Donuts, said,
“No wonder I got laid off. The
man had too many employees
for that little place.”
Even MacDonald’s is feeling
the pressure. Pat Foreman,
who is currently an employee
said, “I may have to quit, I
haven’t worked for two weeks,
and my name is not on the chart
for next week. I may quit — if I
don’t get laid off.”
The only hope for Senior High
students seeking employment is
the opening of the new mall in
March.
blue-black and gold, the Student
Involvement Committee, which
was composed of students of
both schools and represen
tatives of the ninth grades of
Edwards, Parker, and R.M.
Wilson, met after school during
this successful merger. After a
careful consideration of
mascots, they settled on the
Gryphon, a mythical Greek
animal that is half bird and half
lion, combining the speed and
agility of the eagle and the fierce
power of the lion. The colors of
blue-black and gold were
contrived from the blue and
gold colors of Booker T. and the
black and gold colors of Senior
High, thus making the two
schools one.
It’s the
real thing.
