THE GRYPHON — Page Eleven SPORT VIEWPOINT Girls Begin Hard Practices By Sara Jane Collier I feel sorry for Howard Cosell. Everyone makes fun of him. Just because a man is arrogant, pompous, verbose, opinionated, argumentative, and has a voice that resembles fingernails on a chalkboard — well, that’s no reason to hate him, is it? Don’t answer. The other night, while watching an ABC Monday Night Football Telecast, I began to think of all the Howard Cosell jokes that I could. Here are some of my all-time favorites: Did you hear about Evel Knievil’s next daring feat? He’s going to try to jump Howard Cosell’s mouth. And out of the mouth of that master wit, Redd Foxx, comes: “If you are what you eat, Howard must eat garbage.” Muhammed Ali, one who always has something to say about everything, jabbed Cosell with some doozies. “He don’t make the same mistake twice. He makes so many he don’t have time. Howard once wanted to be a fighter, but they couldn’t find a mouthpiece big enough. They are making a Howard Cosell doll: you don’t have to wind it up and it talks anway.” When asked by Cosell how many great sportswriters there were, Joe Namath said, “One less than you think, Howard.” Cosell takes all these jokes in stride. He usually shrugs them off with the line “You’ve been throwing spitballs at a bat tleship. The Rocky Mount Senior High Athletic Department has issued the following warning: Any persons entering the gym nasium between the hours of 3:30 and 4:30, Monday through Friday, enter at their own risk. What is the cause of this bizarre statement? What is so dangerous about the gym during these hours? Have the Russians marked the gym as a target for a bomb raid? Is the building so old that it will fall down at the slightest amount of noise? The reply to all of these questions is “NO.” After a thorough investigation, it was BASTIAN WORKS OUT — Wrestling coach Stan Bastian works out on the RMSH gladiator. Bastain Successful Wrestler and Coach To the general population of most high schools, wrestling as a varsity sport goes unnoticed or unappreciated.
