THE GRYPHON — Page Five Social Bits GIVE US A BIG SMILE — Ken Scalf poses in his favorite clown suit as he tries, unsuccessfully, to attract girls at Belk- Tyler’s Department Store. What’s going to be happening in Rocky Mount during the Christmas Holidays? This question has been asked by many Rocky Mount Senior High students. To satisfy the curiosity of these students, the following has been prepared for your use. Friday, Dec. 20 — The T.A.C. Club will sponsor a D. J. Cabaret featuring Cassonova Thomas from 9:30 to 1:00. Admission will be 50 cents. The Benvenue Country Club will sponsor a Teenage dance from 8 to 12. The Betheletes Society will give a jam at People’s Restaurant from 9:30 to 1:30. Saturday, Dec. 21 — Since no Classes Engage In Creative Projects Que pasa en las clases de Senior High? To answer this question, we’ll first investigate Mrs. Hayworth’s Spanish 4x class. Mrs. Hayworth allows every Friday’s class time to slip through her fingers into the hands of one or two of her Spanish-infested students. These students further enhance their classmates’ knowledge of “Espanol” with anything from Spanish plays to cultural aspects. “Amada” Johnson and “Carolina” Brantley captured the interest of the class with a double feature — “El Conejo Pedrin” (Peter Rabbit) and “Caperucita Roja” (Little Red Riding Hood), and also organized a Spanish Bingo game with tootsie pops awarded to the winners. “Virin” Mizelle refreshed the class with Spanish Sangria and told interesting and cultural facts about his trip to Spain. A dramatization of a play the class studied, “Cuando Las Nubes Cambian De Nariz” (When the Clouds Change Their Noses), was enacted by “Pedro” Landis, “Roberto” Bennett, “Guillermo” Ricks, and “Roberto” Thompson, and added lots of laughs to the class. Some students whose talent lies in the kitchen may prepare Spanish delicacies such as those served by “Susana Elena” Joyner and “Pepita” Nelson. Their treats consisted of Brasileiras (Brazilian coconut cookies), Mantecadas de Astorga (cinnamon muffins), and Sangria (non-alcoholic)! AU-Conference, Only Two? (Continued from page two) have made All-Conference if Coach Wiggins had attended the meeting will never be known. Yet, it seems that our coach could have named any player he felt missed out because of his absence as Honorable Mention. Some schools have taken away some of the honor associated with Honorable Mention by nominating more than their share, but that doesn’t mean that at RMSH it is not still an honor. If the method of selection is not equitable to all schools, a standard system should be established. Possibly in the future, a limit should be put on the number of Honorable Mentions from each school and enforced by all conference teams. Lack of Communication The GRYPHON does not profess to be a football expert. Yet, by seeking out and finding both sides of this issue, it was found that something should be done to keep this from hap pening again. There is obvious tension between the coach and players, which is something that this newspaper cannot straighten out. But there is a break in the line of com munication somewhere. Coach Wiggins has put in long hours of practice, and his mistake of forgetting the All-Conference meeting is one he deeply regrets. At the same time, though, the boys feel unable to talk over these things with him. and the friction felt between them should be calmed. The questions of why only two were chosen and why there were no honorable mentions has only been briefly discussed. The rest of the questions can only be answered by honest and frank discussion, and a comparison of statistics of individual players from all schools. This may prove to hurt some, but still will pave the way for a closer and better line of communication within RMSH’s Athletic Department and the players. In a study of World War I, Mrs. Taylor’s Seminar students created projects which added color to the class. Jerome Gardner and Jake Arnold composed a ballad about the sinking of Lustania entitled “Lusitania.” Jake ac companied the singing with guitar, which Mrs. Taylor feels the students really enjoyed. The seminar students are now preparing a debate on the revolutionary aspects of the New Deal. Two people will debate for both the negative and affirmative sides, with the remaining students divided into teams to research for valid facts to support their stand. Mrs. Murray’s Latin classes created games to play to rehearse and learn their vocabulary. The “New Verb Is Right” game is modeled after the “New Price Is Right” game show on television. But the most popular game is the “Murray Twist,” played on a Twister Board. An English word is given and students playing are to find the Latin equivalent on the board. Mrs. Murray stated “I think that it has provoked more participation by all class members, rather than just the ones that do well.” These “special” classes can really add a lot of fun and in terest to RMSH students, and make room for creativity and involvement. f*Mu§ic Compai^y GUITARS BY Gl BSON, YAMAHA, OVATION AND HARMONY Popular Guitar Books and All Types of Teaching Material 143 South Main Street - Tarrytown Mall -yi9/44i-4]01 PRIDGEN TIRE COMPANY "The Men Who Know Tires Best" 900 N. Christmas Kiddie Jam for underprivileged Students Promote Religious Beliefs Through Devotions Even though government took official prayers out of the schools several years ago, the spirit of Christ still exists in the hearts of many students today, and this is so at RMSH. Everyone at RMSH is invited every morning, Monday through Friday to devotions in the cafeteria. These devotions start around 8:15 and end a few minutes before homeroom starts. This is an informal meeting that was started by several interested students at the beginning of last year. Randy Blackwell is in charge of the devotions, and Libby Turner helps out too. Libby said, “Everyone is welcome to come, and if anyone has any questions we’d be glad to try and look up the answers in the Bible. Of course we don’t know everything but we’re willing to try.” These devotions include prayers, Bible reading and if anyone has anything to say or a , personal testimony to give they ^ are welcome to do so.
