It is the end of another hectic year of our education, and the beginning of a summer of leisurely ad venture. There will be no 3:21 bells and no time-consuming homework. Yet, somehow I feel that not having to slip away to fish will change its importance. It won’t be such a feat if there is no one to tell you not to do it. Still, to the fisherman, it is heaven. In this last column, I’d like to share with you a piece which expresses many of the inner thoughts of the sportsman. Testament of a Fisherman I fish because I love to; because I love the environs where trout are found, which are invariably beautiful, and hate the environs where crowds of people are found, which are invariably ugly; because all the television commercials, cocktail parties and assorted social posturing I thus escape; because in a world where most men seem to spend their lives doing things they hate, my fishing is at once an endless source of delight and an act of small rebellion; because trout do not lie or cheat and cannot be bought or bribed or impressed by power, but respond only to quietude and humility and endless patience; oecause I suspect that men are going along this way for the last lime, and I for one don’t want to waste the trip; because only in the woods can I find solitude without loneliness; because bourbon out of an old tin cup always tastes better out there; because maybe one day I will catch a mermaid; and finally, not because I regard fishing as being so terribly important but because I,suspect that so many of the other concerns of men are equally unimportant — and not nearly so much fun. Robert Traver and Robert W. Kelley Before I sign off, I propose to you these things for you to ponder over during the summer Do you know . . . that the best conditions for a summer fishing are exactly opposite of those for spring fishing? that preferred temperatures for fish are not optimum-catch temperatures? AND . . . that wind direction has no appreciable effect on fishing? Two plastic fishing floats can be quickly used to make an inexpensive buoy for marking structure or a hot fishing spot. Clip the two top rings together and use electrical tape to wrap around the wire clips (from one float to the other). To complete the marker, wind 100 feet of filament around the tape and tie a one ounce lead weight to the line. For better visibility, use fluorescent floats. To each and all (wherever and whomever), hope you make a big catch this summer ... (as a fisherman, of course). merican Credit Company Auto — Loans Recreational Edgecombe Technical Institute Automotive Body Repair Automotive Mechanics Business Administration Child Care Cosmetology Electronic Servicing Electrical Installation Executive Secretary General Office Technology Industrial Mechanic Knitting Mechanic Law Enforcement Machinist Medical Secretary Plastics Technology Registered Nursing Radiologic Technology Operating Room Assistant Industrial Management Edgecombe Tech . . .
