The RMSH Jayvees won their
season opener by defeating the
(’loldsboro JV 58-46. The Gryphs
led 35-21 at the half. Freddie
Woods led the Jayvees in
scoring 21 points and Terry
McKnight scored 11. The high
scorer for Goldsboro was
Donald Hinnant with 10.
RM vs Sanderson
After winning their first game
of the season 58-46 over Golds
boro. the Jayvees suffered
their defeat to Sanderson 52-49,
in a thrilling last second game.
The loss evened up the Gryphs
record at 1-1.
Freddie Woods and Richard
Fountain led the Gryphs with 8
points each. Anthony Hunter led
Sanderson with 13, and Cary
Wolfe followed with 9 and Chris
Morgan and Joe Carpenter
pumped in 8 points each.

Women: Not Too Late
Many women are afraid of
getting hurt, afraid of getting
muscles, afraid of winning. But
because of women like Billie
Jean King, Chrissie Everette,
and Robyn Smith, sports is a
whole new bail game.
Many women question, “Is it
loo late for me?” when they
read that Billie Jean King has
beaten Bobby Riggs in tennis,
or that Robyn Smith, the
Jockey, is the first woman to
compete in any sport on equal
terms with men. It is the first
question that pops up when she
learns that Bernice Gera is the
first woman ever to unpire a
professional baseball game or
that two fourteen-year-old
California girls play in the line
on their school football teams.
“Is it too late for me?” rings
in a woman’s head when she
hears that parents are fighting
for equal school athletic
budgets for their daughters, or
that women gym teachers are
campaigning for equal pay, or
that grade school girls are
sueing to play on their local
Little League teams. The
question repeats when ever she
notices another of the ever
more frequent signs that
women are making on the road
into sports.
Is it too late for her to be a
Billie Jean King or a Robyn
Smith or a football lineperson?
Instances of discrimination
against professional sports
women, school girls and female
gum teachers are only in
dications of the larger fact that
a whole world of experience has
been closed off to her and most
women.
The break-throughs seen now
mean that attitudes are
changing; therefore, the ex
periences of every girl now
growing up will change. It will
be, as they say, a whole new ball
game.
