Undefeated At 5-0
Carter’s Machine
Begins New Year
For the Gryphon Baseball
Team. Spring has brought a
sweet-smelling 5-0 record. The
Grvphs first victory. 6-2. came
in over Raleigh's Enloe as
starter Steve Partin and
reliever Buddy Luper combined
for a suprerb pitching perform
ance.
Rocy Mount's first runs came
in the first inning as clean-up
man, Phil Braswell, knocked a
single up the middle driving in
Ricky Smith and Larry Joyner.
From then on. the victory was a
piece of cake as the Gryphs
tallied four more runs to Enloe’s
two.
In the Gryph's second game
against the Jackets of Roanoke
Rapids, mother nature was the
domineering force. Freezing
temperatures and un-
remitting winds played havoc
with both teams, especially the
fielders on high pop files.
The Gryphons scored the
majority of their runs in
the beginning of the game by
scoring two runs in each of the
first two innings. From then on,
the main concern of the team
was to styme any rallies staged
by the Jackets. This was done
with relative case and resulted
in a 4-3 score in the top of the
sixth in favor of the Gryphs.
Ronald Kearney was on third
base as a courtesy runner for
pitcher Lindon Willis. Mike
Matthews was sent in as a
pinch hitter to make his first
appearance as a varsity player.

5-4.
In the Gryph's third game,
they simply overpowered
Raleigh's Enloe for the
second time this year, 8-3.
Gryphon slugger Larry
Joyner probably captured the
laurels for the game with a
towering bases-empty home run
in the top of the third. However,
unheraled star catcher Mike
Upchurch and consistent pitch
ers Steve Partin and Buddy
Luper do deserve some laudable
praise.
Rocky Mount won its fourth
straight game, 7-1, this time
victimizing Roanoke Rapids.
Perhaps this game was
best summed up by Roanoke
Rapids' Coach. Bobby Carter,
(who is no relation to THE
Coach Carter). "Rocky Mount
has a real fine ball club. We
made a lot of mental mistakes
out there that hurt us, but Rocky
Mount had something to do with
that."
The Gryph’s claimed their
first conference victory. 13-0,
over Northeastern as they
played a flawless game
against a hapless Eagle squad.
Two players on the Gryphon
team were cited by Coach Carter
for their sparkling play: Steve
Partin for a fierce one-hitter and
Gary Ward for tremendous
defensive play.
