1 I Page Twelve — THE GRYPHON — Thursday, May 13, 1976 Kitts Competes In Contest Janet Kitts, a sophomore at Senior High, has competed in and won three levels in the Optoniist Club’s Oratorical Contest. Janet, who wrote on ■'Tomorrow's Promise,” has won on the school, level, local level, and zone level, and will be competing at the district level on June 4 in Asheville. Only eight persons in the nation will win on the district level. Honors Arniouiiced KITTS TO COMPETE...Janet Kilts will compete at the district level of the Optomist Club’s Oratorical Contest on June 4. Clubs Assist Cop Mr. Bill Melton, a former Rocky Mount policeman, has been stricken by a kidney disease and is unable to continue his job. Melton, unable to draw any kind of monetary compensation from the police force, has been left with no form of income and a family's needs to meet. Clubs around the city have provided Mr. Melton and his family with donations from money-making projects. The Community Youth Service Club donated earned proceeds from a special "Bill Melton Car Wash” held at Tarrytown Exxon. Mr. Melton and his family are by no means out of financial trouble now. There are still hospital and medical bills to be paid. The delegates to the Charlotte-based convention were Kelley Hammonds, Deb bie Ezzell, Steve Livesay, Robin Ricks, Lynn McKinney and Tracy Newsome. Serving as both chaperones and advisors were Mr. and Mrs. Harold W. Dearing. Mr. Dearing is a local VICA instructor. Three students competed on the state level. Steve Livesay, after win»'^.g on the district level, represented RMSH in extemporaneous speech. Kelley Hammonds and Debbie Ezzell won second in the state for the safety contest. They presented a booklet in the contest docu menting all the safety projects held during the year through pictures and write-ups. There were three areas in the booklet. These were occupations safety, highway safety, and home safety. Members of the safety committee from RMSH who did not attend the convention were Carolyn Smith and Kathy Ezzell. The delegates who went to VICA convention went at their own expense.
