Thursday, May 13, 1976 — THE GRYPHON — Page Seven Twenty-Two Bands Meet To Do Battle In Festival On April 9, 22 bands met at Senior High from all over Eastern North Carolina to do battle in the Eastern Carolina Band Festival Contest. The bands competed on various levels ranging from 1-6, with one being the elementary and six being the most advanced. Out of all the 22 bands only six received superior ratings. Rocky Mount Senior bands were among them. The Wind Ensemble com posed of the top 63 musicians chosen from all students engaged in music studies at Senior High and under the directorship of Mr. J. C. Sykes performed at the sixth level. The Concert Band conducted by Mr. Charles Woods was composed of the remaining 65 performers and played at the fourth level. The R.M. Wilson band performed at level five and also received a superior rating. Accomplished musicians who rated the individual bands were Mr. Harold Jones from E.C.U., Mr. Herbert L. Carter from E.C. U., Mr. Richard Southwicks from Raleigh Broughton High School, Mr. Emery Fears from Norfolk State College, and Mr. Don Adcocks from U.N.C. Mr. Sykes stated that the bands are certainly to be commended in that all of them performed at their best. See-Saw Marathon Held From 9:00 a.m. Friday to 10:00 p.m. Saturday, Tarrytown Mall was the scene of a see-saw marathon conducted for the benefit of crippled children by the Rocky Mount Youth for Easter Seals. Approximately 20 local mem bers of a segment of the Pine Valley Chapter participated in the program by taking pledges, collecting donations, and work ing in the marathon from 4:00 p.m. Saturday in shifts of three hours. Members of the segment from Senior High are Donna Edwards, Paul Snead, Suzanne Cobb, Travis Cobb, Gina Diehl, Tina Joyner, Laura Watkins, Barrett Scott, and Dale Allen. One member stated, “After about an hour the donators sort of began dropping off. ’ ’ The members’ advisor fre quently fled the scene for food to keep their energy going. Pillows were provided for the see-saws, and one participant utilized three in a determined effort not to come down with fanny fatigue. The event was fairly success ful with members collecting approximately $500 off the mall and about $700 in pledges. Junior-Senior Brings Crowd Local Students Attend Peace Poetry Festival A poetry festival was held at Peace College April 10 for persons who had submitted poems in a poetry contest. No one had to have a certain grade average or engage in certain outside activities. The advisors at the festival were Dr. Michael Reynolds from N.C. State, Ms. Sally Buckner, Coastal Plain Life Insurance Co. We Sell Peace of Mind Suzanne Newton, Meg Revelle, Anna Wooten, Rose Young, and students from Peace. These teachers took different groups and divided the differently schooled youths into those groups. The students who attended from Senior High were Mary Sue Cummings, Babs Brown, and Cynthia Dew. They were accompanied by Mrs. Betty Hardy. The students read their poetry, and the group discussed, criticized and/or praised the poems. It all seemed to be a very relaxed and open seminar. This unique experience is held annually. It is sponsored in part by the North Carolina Arts Council.'The judges use a 1-4 scale. The first three place winners received cash, and the others received a special merit. According to the students who attended, some very advantageous and helpful coun seling was given. They were asked to revise the poems with emphasis on expression of thoughts. The sources for the poems should be from personal experiences, family and friends, history, or the Bible. The advisors stressed the need for The music of Fudge Ripple reverberated throughout the festive gymnasium. Girls em bellished in multi-colored gowns with their slightly hesitant dates coyly sauntered through the crepe paper, tree branches, wicker furniture, and swings. Months of preparation and anticipation came to a climax at the 1976 Junior Senior on Friday evening, April 30. The theme echoed in the decor was “We May Never Pass This Way Again.” Attendance for the annual event was estimated to be approximately 600, slightly above last year. titling the poems and letting the idea of the poem speak, using insight and very personal feelings. Denise Alston stated, “A lot of work went into the Junior Senior, and it was worthwhile.” Over hearing her comment, Mark Landis added, “a dang good band.” Clyde Sifford then asserted, “The band and decorations committee ought to be congratulated. They were great.” Angela Winston, caught in the hall, admitted she was unable to attend but said, “I heard the program and band were really nice.” Ms. Poole, faculty member in charge of the Program Committee, said, “Everything was very well done. All the students I talked with had a good time.
