Ricky Lewis and William Battle left the divisional meet in Greenville successful participants. Lewis placed second in the 180 low hurdles and 120 high hurdles, while Battle placed fourth in the long jump. These marks allowed both of them to go to the sectionals in Cary, where both thin-clads placed second in their respective events. Battle was unable to ad vance to the regionals held at ECU because of an injury, and Lewis, although qualifying in the 180 low hurdles in the preliminaries, did not place. But they lost the first round of the state tournament to a Winston-Salem doubles team, 7-6, 6-7, 6-2. Del Eatman and Tim English also traveled to the sectionals in Wilson as a doubles combination, but were defeated in the The Gryphs have been playing well lately despite the fact that all the rain resulted in the cancellation of the Rocky Mount-Northern Nash game. Rocky Mount ran its record to 12-10 with wins over Greenville, Wilson and Bertie and a loss to Northeastern. Rocky Mount and Greenville squared off in the type of game which fans love and coaches hate. For the first four innings the Gryphs threatened to score every time; however, they lacked the timely hits. On the other end of the bat, senior pitching star Steve Partin was attempting to attain the epitome of superb pitching — a perfect game. Partin pitched SVi innings until a bloop single spelled his demise. At that point the Gryphs lead 1-0, but a walk and an error allowed Greenville to tie the score. Then Mike Brewington sent Greenville ahead by driving a single up the middle. The game proceeded with the score 3-2 in favor of the Gryphs until the top of the seventh. However, a walk to the leadoff man followed by two wild pitches allowed the runner to reach third. Greenville then pulled a suicide bunt which scored the man on third and tied the score 3-3. However, the Gryphs were not to be denied as pitcher Steve Partin led off with a single. Ronald Kearney’s sacrifice moved ‘‘The Champ” to second. Gary Ward’s base hop single then moved St. Amand to third. Greenville, recognizing power, then intentionally walk ed “Buck” Braswell to load the bases. This called for Mike Upchurch to come up and cooly knock a single into right field to win the game 4-3. The Gryphs attempted to play Northeastern twice but mother nature washed it away. When the game was finally played. Rocky Mount probably wished it would have rained! Rocky Mount lost another game by a close margin as they lost 4-3. For their final games of the year the Gryphs played a unique day-night doubleheader. Apparently the Gryphs liked this setup as they defeated Wilson and Bertie to sweep the doubleheader. The Gryphs defeated Wilson behind Phillip Bunn’s masterful four-hit pitch ing. Not enough can be said for the superb pitching of Steve Partin. Partin, 8-3 for the year, handcuffed Bertie 13-4 to help the Gryphs close out their season 12-10. quarter-final round.
