Rocky Mount and Greenvill squared off in the type of garr which fans love and coach( hate. For the first four inning the Gryphs threatened to scoi every time; however, the lacked the timely hits. On tl other end of the bat, senii pitching star Steve Partin wi attempting to attain the epiton of superb pitching — a perfe game. Partin pitched 5 innings until a bloop sing spelled his demise. At that point the Gryphs le; 1-0, but a walk and an err allowed Greenville to tie t! score. Then Mike Brewingt sent Greenville ahead by drivi) a single up the middle. Ricky Lewis and William Battle left the divisional meet in Greenville successful participants. Lewis placed second in the 180 low hurdles and 120 high hurdles, while Battle placed fourth in the long jump. These marks allowed both of them to go to the sectionals in Cary, where both thin-clads placed second in their respective events. Battle was unable to ad vance to the regionals held at ECU because of an injury, and Lewis, although qualifying in the ITO low hurdles in the preliminaries, did not place. Had they placed, they would have been eligible for state competition at N. C.
