Awards were given to outstanding athletes who excelled in various sports, and a special award was given to the overall outstanding female and male athlete for the year 1975-76. The various recipients of the awards were chosen by fellow teammates and coaches. Taken into account were the athletes overall attitude toward fellow teammates and their ability in the sport. The awards presentations went as follows: Over-all Athlete of the Year, Female Allison Sellars; Male, Ronald Kearney. FootbaU Defensive Player of the Year, Dennis Coit; Credit Company Recreational Best Blocker — McCarge Clark; Most Valuable Player — Joey Robbins; Lineman of the Year — Ronnie King; Best Hustler — Ricky Sharpe; Most Dedicated Player — Ken Blocker. Girls Tennis Most Valuable Player — Lee Bennett; Tennis Award — Julie Ward. Cross Country Most Outstanding Runner — Julius Jones; Varsity Basketball Most Valuable Player — Charles Williams. Girls Baslsetball Most Improved Player — Gaje Shearin; Most Valuable Player — Charlotte Ward. Wrestling Most Valuable Wrestler — McCarge Clark; Most Improved Wrestler — Gerald Wiggins. Chain Saws I Lawn Mowers | The Lady Gryphons, after absorbing three straight losses in conference play against Bertie, Northern Nash, and Wilson; bounced back and took a game from Greenville Rose to even their record at 5-5. Scoring single runs in the first, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings, and holding Greenville scoreless led to the 4-0 victory. Rocky Mount was led by the hitting of Diawana McNair and Allison Sellars, and the RBI’s of Amy Smith, Gail McClain, Donna Barnhill, and Diawana McNair. Hurt by nine errors, the girls dropped a close game to Northeastern, 13-12. The Lady Gryphons scored two runs in the first inning and two more in the third before the Northeastern girls answered back with five runs of their own in the fourth. Rocky Mount picked up three runs in the fifth to one for Elizabeth City to go ahead 7-6. But the sixth inning proved to be the downfall of the Gryphons PEPSI as Northeastern scored seven runs, while the Gryphons could only pound out five. Rocky Mount was led by the hitting of Donna Arrington, Gail McClain, Diawana McNair, Arlinda Har rison, and Allison Sellars. After picking up an end of the season win against Northern Nash and suffering a loss against Wilson Fike, the girls finished the season with a 6-7 record. “We were hurt by inconsis tency this year,” said Coach Bradshaw. “We didn’t do as well as ‘1 expected, but the team was young.” With only two starters graduating, Bradshaw lotfks forward to next season.
