Page Eight — THE GRYPHON — Tuesday, June 1.1976 Helo's Year Ending Now In Rocky Mt. Twinkling eyes and impish grin start to spread on Helo Martin's face when she is asked a question about Senior High. She's a little diffident at first, but after she has spread a few smiles and her eyes have started to gleam you can really see the true Helo. Almost completing her whole year at a totally strange and foreign school, she has picked up many habits from her peers. Helo is fascinated by American History. The culture and the family life has especially played an important role in her stay. Helo remarks, “1 can see the main differences between Bra- zillian and American life. And what I consider really important is to be able to live inside of an American Home, where this family can love and care about me." Helo hasn’t just spent her time in Rocky Mount, she has been around in several states, and cities, such as Washington, D.C., Williamsburg, Va., and recreation center King's Do minion. She also visited the Peach Bowl in Atlanta, Ga. Helo and her family, the Whitleys' visited these places together. She has also been to New York City with the Journalism classes to the annual convention at Columbia University. One thing Helo comments on as important to her is the AFS weekends where she was able to meet other exchange students. Helo really enjoyed this because she could share ideas which were helpful to her and to others. Helo says, “Now that my year is almost over, I can say that this experience has brought some changes in myself, the way I think, and act, and many more attitudes have been changed to good. If you perform well you may become a second-class petty officer during your initial enlistment, making over $700 a month (along with Navy benefits like medical and dental care).
