Roberson Captures Crown In Annual Sports Pageant Jimmy Roberson captured the roses and was crowned Mr. Good Sports Club in the first annual Good Sports Club Sport Pageant, held in conjunction with the annual athletic picnic at Sunset Park on May 10. In the talent competition, Jimmy and Brad Shields took the honors, while .Gerald Wiggins came in a distant second. Jimmy presented a dramatic reading of a poem entitled “Rain.” Little did he know that when it rains, it pours. That is, from the buckets of Good Sports Club members. Brad, for his talent, sang “Que Sera, Sera.” He was not Doris Day, but at least he tried with some amazing 32-28-32 mea surements in the evening gown competiton. Gerald showed the audience his acrobatic prowess by doing one forward somer sault, one reverse somersault, and one cartwheel. While the contestants went off stage to prepare for the evening gown competition. Mistress of Ceremonies Pam Daniels introduced can-can girls Beth Hignite, Georgia Miller, Terri Hines, and Cynthia McKnight, and athletes Ricky Lewis, Buddy Luper, Joey Robbins, Ronnie King, Tim English, and Tom Groome, who presented a show entitled the Good Sports Club Follies. Apart from the black tights and jean skirts of the can-can girls, not much can be said for the entertainment provided, and all eyes awaited the contestants’ return in evening gowns. In the evening gown compe tition, Jimmy’s dress featured a revealing red satin bodice accentuated by spaghetti straps and a full red net standout skirt. Brad wore an empire waist green gown with white velvet bodice, while Gerald wore a green and white checked gown with blue-trimmed sleeves. Jimmy’s evening gown stole the hearts of the audience and the judges, and insured him of victory with his first place tie in the talent competition. Taking a few moments to compose himself back stage, Jimmy came out and received the red rose and tinfoil crown, symbols of the office, and was dubbed Mr. Good Sports Club of 1976. The athletes were served hot dogs and hamburgers cooked over an open grill by Good Sports Club members prior to the sport pageant. Macii Wiggins Mack Wiggins, a star in wrestling, has received a scholarship from Elizabeth City State University. Mack said, “My parents and I both felt quite happy about it. I’m looking forward to going to Elizabeth City State. I think I’ll have to make an adjustment from the high atmosphere to the college atmosphere, but com peting in sports is pretty much the same. The competition is on a higher level in college than in high school. I’ll have to make a real adjustment as far as studies,” continued Wiggins, “and I’ll have to plan my study time. I’ve enjoyed getting to know the teachers and students at Senior High. I’ve enjoyed my years at Senior High. I think we have some real nice coaches at Senior High. Coach Bastian means a lot to me as a coach, and is a person I can go to with any type of problem.” Wiggins has played football, run track, and wrestled at Senior High. He was a divisional wrestling champion and the Gryphs Wrestler of the Month in January. McCarge Ciark McCarge Clark, a wrestling star at Senior High for the past three years, has received a scholarship to Elizabeth City State University. I’m looking forward to going to college.” McCarge wants to major in Political Science or Mathematics at Elizabeth State. In wrestling, McCarge re ceived the Most Improved Player Award as a junior.
