[photo by Treg Bulluck] Medical Explorers Aid Area Students Helping high school students in the area to decide whether they like the health field is Nash General Hospital's purpose in sponsoring the Rocky Mount Medical Explorer Post accord ing to Mr. Ben Blackburn. Post advisor Ben Blackburn said “We also try to give young people opportunity to investi gate firsthand any specific occupation in which they may have an interest." The mem bers of the Explorer Post take tours of the hospital and spend time observing people at work in the fields in which they believe they are interested in. On October 3 at 7:30 p.m. the hospital is planning an orienta tion program for any prospec tive members. Parents are invited to come with the interested students. Students must be 14 or in the ninth grade to join the post. Any qualified student interested in any medical field is urged to come by the Explorer Post. The Post meets every other Tuesday night at the hospital during the school season and every Tuesday night during the summer. Anatomy classes and observation programs are plan ned during these meetings. Past activities have included trips to Camp Bonner and Caro'winds. Future trips in clude games at East Carolina University and beach conven tions. Meetings begin at 7:30 p.m. and normally end around 8:30 p.m. depending upon the length of the business meeting and whether anything special is planned. The officers are president Keith Rivenbark; 1st vice president Gina Diehl; 2nd vice president Emmerson Har rison; secretary, Kathy Carroll; and treasurer Ronald Hall. Schools Form Council Last year four area schools, Rocky Mount Senior High, West Edgecombe, Rocky Mount Academy, and Northern Nash Senior High, set up the Rocky Mount Area Student Council. This program is designed to promote cooperation among the four schools in city-wide Public Office Service 109 S. Main St. 446-5102 projects. Two of the proposed projects for this year are a bike-a-thon and a student day in public office. The meetings are open to the public; however, no standard meeting date has been set as of yet. [photo by Treg Bulluck] From peacocks to pianos runs the special interests of Senior High’s new teachers! Mrs. Marcie Riddick teaches Sophomore English. Mrs. Rid dick is use to smaller schools than Senior High and she says it took some getting use to. Mrs. Riddick has been previously teaching over at George R. Edwards Junior High. She enjoys sewing, traveling, and relaxing with her children. In room 211 is a familiar face to seniors and faculty, for she has taught at Senior High for eight years and stopped last year to have a child; she is Mrs. Elaine Rose. Mrs. Rose teaches Social Studies. “It’s like coming home; I know so many of the students from R.M.” This was the reaction of Mr. Reggie Hender son at being chosen a new coach. He also enjoys being witht the other coaches an is “really looking forward to the basketball season.” Senior High has three new teachers that went to school at East Carolina University. Mr. Mike Brown is not only a new teacher but is soon to be a newlywed for his fiance teaches at Edwards which added incentive to his coming to Rocky Mount. Mr. Brown feels the “students are really well-be haved” at Senior High. Mr. Brown teaches Social Studies. Another East Carolina graduate is Mr. Frank Emery. Although Mr. Emery attended East Carolina he also went to the University of North Carolina. Mr. Emery teaches Algebra II and student taught under Mrs. Privott last year. The other East Carolina graduate when asked where she went to school replied that she went to East Carolina which was “the same team that beat State.” This teacher was Mrs. Lela Chesson, the wife of Coach Chesson. For the last three years Mrs. Chesson worked for the Rocky Mount Telegram. She is enjoying the change but “enjoyed the Telegram work as well.” Mrs. Chesson is a free-lance writer and “hopes to continue it on the side.” Mrs. Chesson teaches Sophomore English. Biology teacher, Mrs. Nancy Farmer has a live peacock as a pet! In addition to this fantastic bird she enjoys playing the piano and sewing. She went to Meredith and Atlantic Christian College. Mrs. Farmer “thinks the students are real nice,” and that she has “a good situation.” Mrs. Joyce Colwell transfer red from R.M. Wilson Junior High. She teaches geometry. “Since this is her first year teaching geometry, I think she is doing a very good job.
