Thursday, September 30, 1976—THE GRYPHON—Page Eleven Boogie, Shake, And Lean “Boogie, shake and lean” with the Varsity Cheerleaders as they urge the team to victory, encourages squad member, Beth Hutchisson. For the first time in recent years two guys are on the Varsity Cheerleading Squad, Alton Edwards and Kenny Edgerton. They do stunts with the girls after cheers and after, touchdowns. Beth Hutchisson says, “They really add a lot of school spirit.” The majority of the cheering squad remains girls: Susan Thorne and Lanie Powell, co-heads; Denise Alston, Ruth Battle, Lindy Fields, Renee Freeman, Delphine Hinton, Beth Hutchisson, Dayle Law rence, Angela Lloyd, Lisa McCullugh, Kenny Edgerton, and Alton Edwards. Pep-rallies should help the school’s spirit since there will be three pep-rallies plus one for homecoming, according to cheerleader Ruth Battle. A pep-rally is planned before the game with Northern Nash for homecoming and also before the Bertie, Greenville, and Wilson games. The Junior Varsity Cheerlea ders also plan to have a successful year says squad member Patricia Simmons. They do not have any guys on their squad, but they do have some new cheers. They are: “Rock Steady,” “Gotcha,” “Success,” and “Hey You, Hey Gryphons.” The Junior Varsity Cheerlea ders for 1976-77 are: Kathy Callahan and Cynthia Lloyd, co-heads; Cheryl House, Beth Berry, Sheri Vines, Patricia Simmons, Kim Lassiter, and Lorraine Bulluck. He is coach of the defensive backs on the Varsity Football Team. Coach Batts is a graduate of the Rocky Mount Senior High Class of 1972. He was captain of the Varsity Football Team, and he played some basketball too. His position on the football team was quarterback and defensive back. He attended college at Quality Portraits Fine Selection Of Frames Barringer's 129 Western Ave. Phone 446-5738 Appalachian State where he played football and majored in Political Science, of which he says, “It’s very complicated, very interesting, and there is still a lot 1 haven’t learned about it.” Coach Batts first became interested in sports by watching them on T.V., and going to football games with his God father, David Atkinson, head coach of the football team at Booker T. Washington. His parents also influenced him to play sports because they participated a great deal in sports. Coach Batts says that he enjoys training the football team, and when basketball season rolls around Coach Batts will be head JV Coach. He is on the Senior High campus at fifth and sixth periods. During the other part of the day he is teaching P.E. at Bassett and Holland schools. Coach Batt’s future plans are to teach indefinitely and then to go to Law School. The Gryphs were originally slated to play Greenville, but are now scheduled to meet county rival Northern Nash. October 8 is a teacher work day and students will not be attending school. Therefore, many faculty members and students feel it would take some of the excitement and spirit away from the day because events such as the mini-parade would be a day before the game. By Clifton Bames The 1976 Rocky Mount Senior High football squad has a new look and outlook this year. For the first time in several years the Grypons are picked to finish first in their division and are a pre-season pick as a number five in the state. The Gryphons have a winning outlook that hasn’t yet been altered. When a team is winning, the school and the community bring about helpful changes. An example is the addition of new road uniforms. Also, the varsity players are given shirts to wear on road games. This year there are more prizes for the “Gryphon of the Week” than ever before. Among these prizes are a trophy reading “Gryphon of the Week,” a free meal at the YMCA, a $5 gift certificate from Rosembloom-Levy, two tickets to the Cinema, a movie theater, a free meal at Sambo’s for two, a free Sundae from Dairy Queen, and the album of his choice from WEED. Even the Gryphon official program has been upgraded by giving a personal profile of each varsity f player. All of these things and more have helped to improve the Gryphon football program. Coaching changes have also been in the news. Junior Varsity Coach Guion Davis has retired and has been succeeded by Coach Jerry Carter. For several years Reggie Henderson was an assistant coach at R.M. Wilson and has worked with most of the boys. He is now an assistant coach for the “Gryphs.” Roscoe Batts, a 1972 Rocky Mount Senior High graduate has also joined the coaching staff as an assistant. Maybe the Gryphons outlook has been helped in molding by the appearance of College Scouts. These Scouts came before the season and may be still following the Gryphons. According to Head Coach Walt Wiggins, he wasn’t in a position to tell reporters who the scouts have mentioned to him. Speculation is that they may be observing the seniors, among whom are Co-captains Lloyd Bynum and Mike Upchurch. They could also be watching juniors and sophomores. In other words they are keeping an eye open, at least according to rumor. |iiiiiiiiiiiiiiitiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiimiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiHiiiiiiiiiimiiimmi| I WIMBERLY-6REG0RY & COMPANY | = 118 s.
